Eye to Eye

The reader and Jay don’t always see eye to eye, Jay uses the necessary force to get the answers whereas you work hard to patch people up, with gentleness. But when a patient comes in and starts foaming, everyone is suddenly working hard to save you and him. Characters – Jay x Doctor!Reader. Word Count – 1.5k.

‘What are you doing here?’ You asked, Jay stood at the end of the bed. ‘I-‘ ‘I can’t talk just now, I’m training four interns who don’t know their elbows from their knees.’ You said, checking over the patient, Jay glanced at the young doctors who looked offended. ‘I just wanted to let you know it’s gonna be a late night for me.’ Jay said, you sighed and looked at him. ‘Okay.’ ‘Do you want me to leave any dinner for you?’ You asked him, the interns heads whipped between the pair of them. ‘No, I’ll grab something on the way back.’ He told you, you glanced at him before nodding. ‘Just be careful.’ You warned him, he nodded. ‘It’s only a drug bust, at the Red Cell.’ He told you, you pursed your lips before nodding. ‘But I know be careful.’ He said, almost rolling his eyes before pressing a quick kiss to the side of your head.

‘Shit.’ You said, watching as the white foam slowly rolled out his mouth. Quickly dropped the items in your hand you turned to your interns and waved them out the room, they looked confused but listened to your silent commands. When they were out the door you slid the door shut and locked it from the outside, turning back you slammed your gloved hand on the red button, listening to blaring alarms that went off everywhere. ‘Y/N.’ Maggie asked, you turned to her as you looked through the glass. ‘He’s poisoned.’ You told her, your voice muffled by the doors. ‘What?’ She asked, the device she was holding fell to her side. Connor, Choi and Natalia. ‘He’s poisoned, toxic if you want.’ You said, looking over the doctors. ‘Get out then.’ Connor said, you held up your right hand and showed them the cut that was visible now you had taken your glove off. ‘He grabbed me earlier, sliced through my glove but I-‘ You trialed off. ‘It’s okay, we’ll need you to do some tests so we can figure out.’ Maggie told you, Natalia showing up at your side along with Will, looking through the glass. ‘What symptoms does he have?’ Will asked, you looked at the pair, worry was etched on their faces that they were trying to hide. ‘Foaming at the mouth, nothing else.’ You informed them. ‘What did he come in with?’ Maggie asked, she watched as you removed your gloves and chucked them in the bin. ‘He had been vomiting for most of last night,’ One of the interns spoke up, Maggie turned to them as you looked through the glass door. ‘Anything else to get like this?’ You asked them, testing their knowledge. ‘High temperature, rapid heart beat and quickened breathing.’ One of the interns from the back stated, you made eye contact with them and nodded. ‘That’s an overdoes on cocaine.’ Another added. ‘Anything else?’ Natalia asked, Will standing next to her as well. ‘Small pupils that were lacking reaction, which is an opioid reaction.’ Another added, you rubbed your lips together as you slowly pulled on a new pair of gloves. ‘The drugs must have been laced with something.’ Will suggested then the heart monitor started beating frantically, your head whipped around and your crossed the room as your quickly slipped a guard into his mouth as he clenched hard, his body shaking. You held his cheeks, waiting for his body to calm down as you looked at the clock about the bed, watching as the seconds ticked along before shaking his head. ‘I’m giving him narcan.’ You stated. ‘What if it reacts?’ Someone asked, you hesitated. ‘He’s going to cause more harm to himself like this.’ You said, pulling the amount needed before pulling his shaking arm out, placing yourself between him and his arm. You managed to slid the needle in, before injecting the clear liquid waiting for him to calm down. ‘You need the antidote Y/N.’ Maggie said, you looked between them. ‘We don’t know what it is?’ You pointed out, gesturing to the barely conscious man. ‘Rabies?’ Natalia suggested. ‘Can’t you only get that from animals?’ One of the interns asked, you looked down at your scratched hand, wriggling your fingers before turning back to the patient. You turned away, pulling the scissors out before cutting his clothes off, looking for any marks. After searching his upper half you cut his trousers, up to his crotch were you saw the small pinpoint mark. ‘Will?’ You called for your friend, knowing he was there. ‘Yeah?’ He replied, still searching for anything. ‘Can you phone Jay, or anyone over there.’ You said, chucking the scissors between your patients legs. ‘Why?’ He asked. ‘He said he was doing a drug bust-‘ You started. ‘Y/N?’ Will questioned, you focused on the clothes. ‘It’s the same group, I think it might be a trap or something isn’t right if he’s poisoned.’ You told him, gesturing to the man in front of you. You turned to look at him, he looked at you before nodding. ‘I’ve got a bite mark.’ You announced, you could see their shoulders relaxing. ‘Rabies.’ Everyone said, you nodded. ‘Rabies.’ You agreed with them. ‘If he’s showing symptoms then he doesn’t have long.’ Choi pointed out, you nodded. ‘We can-‘ ‘What the hell are you doing?’ The voice called out, you closed your eyes before you turned and looked at him. ‘Working.’ You replied, looking away from Jay and focusing on the unconscious man again. ‘He’s infected.’ Jay said, holding your hand up as Will stepped closer to him. ‘Jay, he has rabies and doesn’t have all day.’ You told him, then you looked to his brother. ‘We can try the Milwaukee Protocol.’ Will suggested, you arched an eyebrow before nodding. ‘Guys what is the Milwaukee Protocol?’ You asked you interns. ‘Placing the patient into an endured coma in order to stop the disease from furthering.’ They mumbled out together, you nodded. ‘Good.’ You said, looking at the man that was literally knocking on deaths door and you hoped death was away collecting someone else. ‘It’s marked red and only one person that survived it.’ One of the interns pointed out, you nodded. ‘Do you want him to die?’ Someone asked, they started bickering but quietened down when you turned to them, placing your hands on your hips, eyes narrowed. ‘We could always do the Recife Protocol.’ Someone suggested, you looked back at the patient before nodding. ‘It’s up for vote we can give them biopretin or sapropterin.’ You stated, turning to look at the group of interns who were watching her with wide eyes. ‘What’s more likely to work?’ You asked them, they continued to look at you you allowed your eyes to swipe over to Will. ‘At this stage, we’d be lucky if anything happened.’ Will pointed out, your lips twitched his heart rate dropping again.

‘You done giving me a heart attack?’ Jay asked, you looked over your shoulder to see him leaning against the doorway, arms crossed over his chest. ‘You shouldn’t joke about serious conditions.’ You warned him, tying your shoe laces. ‘I’m not joking.’ He stated, walking into the changing room. ‘Will said you were dying.’ He practically whispered. ‘Will is over dramatic.’ You commented as you stood up, turning you lifted your bag up, chucking it over your shoulder before he stepped forward. ‘Please move, I want to go home, have dinner and then fall into bed.’ You told him, he uncrossed his arms, reaching up to cup your face, his thumbs brushing your cheeks. ‘Promise me you wont do that again.’ ‘I can’t.’ You said. ‘Y/N.’ He sighed, you titled your head to the side. ‘Jay, my patients become before me, you know that and it won’t change just because the man I’m dating is scared.’ You warned him, he inhaled before slowly exhaling. ‘Scared?’ He asked, before scoffing. ‘I was petrified that my girlfriend, the love of my life had been dosed with something, I didn’t know if you were dying or if Will was over reacting again like he did when your broke your arm.’ Jay said, you gave him a tight smile. ‘I can’t promise you, but I can try my best.’ You told him, your hands coming up to rest on his waist. ‘I think I can deal with that.’ He admitted, you nodded. ‘I’m the love of your life?’ You asked playfully, he rolled his eyes. ‘Don’t play the cute card.’ He warned, leaning over and pressing a kiss to your forehead. ‘Oh, we almost had four interns almost pass out this morning.’ You told him. ‘What did you do to them?’ He asked, you pulled away from him. ‘Nothing. It was you that did it.’ You bumped your nose with his. ‘They were shocked that we were dating.’ You explained, he pulled away slightly to look you in the eyes. ‘They didn’t know?’ He asked shocked, you shook your head. ‘No because I don’t go around announcing that we are dating.’ You told him, his face twisted. ‘Neither do I?’ He said, you pulled back to look at him and raise an eyebrow. ‘Not all of the time.’ He corrected himself, you laughed before his hand slid down and captured yours before he started leading you out the changing room.

To say that things haven’t been going well between you and Jay, was very noticeable. Almost everyone could sense the huge tense silence when others were around the both of you. It didn’t help that Jay was constantly blowing you off, him preferring to hang out with is work partner, and it also didn’t help that your older brother, Kelly was making thing more tense, and picking fights with him.

Tonight, it was supposed to be your five-year anniversary, but he still wasn’t home. Letting out a small sigh, you just served your plate of food grabbed the wine bottle and made your way towards the dining table and started to eat alone.

You were about to finish eating, when the doorbell rang, and you let out a small frown, walking up to the door, grabbing the bat by the door, and peeked through the peephole, you let out a sigh of relief, when you saw that it was Kelly. Opening the door, you gave your older brother a fake smile.  

“Hey, what are you doing here?”

He just raised an eyebrow at you and walked in the apartment. “Don’t try that fake smile on me, you know better than doing that.”

Your face fell and just closed the door. “What do you want Kelly?”

He turned to you. “I just wanted to come and check up on you. I was at Molly’s and saw your boyfriend there and you weren’t, I thought something was up, so I came.”

You looked at him in the eye, tears already forming in your eyes. Kelly’s gaze softened up and he pulled you in for a hug, which only caused you to break down. “What am I doing wrong?”

“Nothing, you’re doing nothing wrong, baby girl. Jay’s is just an idiot who doesn’t know how to cherish you.”

You pulled away from the hug and wiped your eyes. “Today is our five-year anniversary, and I doubt he remembers that.” You admitted, looking away. You let out a bitter laugh. “I don’t think I ever felt much like a fool as I do right now. I should’ve known that this was going to happen.” You said, remembering the rough months that you went through when he lost a friend of his.

Kelly grimaced. “I wish there was something I can do to help.” He replied, rubbing your arms.

You just looked down to your feet. “Can I stay with you?” you whispered.

“You don’t even have to ask, baby girl, you know I will say yes.”

You just nodded and looked up at the ceiling to keep yourself from crying and made your way towards yours and Jay’s room. “I’m just gonna pack some things, I need time away from here to figure out what I want to do.”

Kelly helped you pack some things. “What do you want to do?”

You paused and looked at him. “I don’t know.” You whispered.

Kelly just nodded and gently wrapped an arm around. “It’s all going to be okay in the end.” He muttered. You just nodded and the both of you started to pack most of your things up, by the time Jay finally came home, most of your stuff was gone and all he could do was just stare at the empty side of his bed when it came time to finally sleep.

The following two days were past in a hazy daze, spending most of your time, thinking about what you were gonna do with Jay and the whole somewhat mess, that was your relationship. Sighing you just let out a groan, and Kelly turned to you.

“Still can’t figure it out, huh?” he asked, as he gathered his bag, to head off into his shift for 24 hours.

You turned to your older brother and shrugged. “I can’t continue being unhappy, Kelly. I love him so much, but what he’s doing, it hurts.” You admitted. “And I can’t allow myself to go through that pain, that he’s putting me through.”

Kelly just nodded and watched as you grabbed your bag, phone and keys. “Wait, where are you going?”

“To Jay’s place, I need to get the rest of my stuff, and tell him that we’re through, I love him, but I got to think about my own happiness.” You replied, making your leave.

About a long drive towards Jay’s place, you looked out of the car window, and saw that the lights were on, taking a deep breath in, you got out your car, and started to make your way inside the building. Your nerves were acting up, and finally you reached the apartment door that belonged to Jay and knocked on it.

You can hear someone letting out a groan from the inside. “What?” Jay snapped, answering the door. He froze when he noticed that it was you standing. “Y/N.”

Giving him a tight smile and small wave. “Hey.”

“Came to get the rest of your stuff?” He snarled. Your jaw tightens.

“You would assume.” You replied coolly.

Jay just snorted and stepped aside allowing you to enter, you let out a small scoff and entered, looking around the place. “Came here to judge me or something?”

“Can you stop with that tone?” you snapped, taking a deep breath in, you looked away from Jay’s intense gaze. “I actually came to talk about us.”

Jay didn’t reply for a second and then looked away. “Why do you always leave? It’s just like last time.” He paused, waiting for you to answer, but you didn’t respond. "What are you so afraid of?"

You stared at him, while you processed the question he just asked you, "Having my heartbroken by you, that's what I'm afraid of."

Jay just stared at you, and you can see the anger rising in his eyes, you just let out a small bitter laugh, trying to resist the urge to cry, because it was happening, you guys were finally going to call it quits, you can just feel it.

“God, Jay, you don’t get it. All the small stunts you’ve been pulling, hurts me. Wanna know what the final straw was?” You ask, now crying. “You not being here on the night of our five-year anniversary. Jay’s face crumpled a bit.

“I’m sorry.” Jay replied softly. “I just- I’m really am sorry.”

You let out a sob and shook your head at him. “Wanna know what’s the worst thing about all this?” Jay shook his head. “It feels like whatever we do, it’s never going to work out.”

Jay froze. “Are you breaking up with me?” he whispered.

“I don’t want to Jay, but this? It’s hurting me a lot, I can’t let you break me, I love you, but I love myself even more, and I’m not going to put myself through more pain, when you won’t change on how you act towards our relationship.”

Jay took a step forward, his face morphed in desperation. “Y/N, please. Just please, give me another chance."

You shook your head. "I'm done giving you chances, I'm done."

Jay had tears rolling down his cheek. “Please.”

Shaking your head, you just turned back and ran out the front door, ignoring his cries. Crying you just kept on running, until you got into your car, quickly you turned on the engine, and basically sped out the apartments parking lot, not even daring to stop until you got near the highway.

Now fully sobbing, you were feeling around for your phone in the passenger seat, no being able to find it, you let out a small desperate cry, you took your eyes off the road, and searched for your phones, when you heard a loud car honk, gasping you managed to swerve the car, and let out a loud yell when your car managed to hit the curb and flew over into the huge canal of water.

Kelly’s heart pounded, as he was doing CPR on his little sister, Y/N, while Gabby was getting the bag ready. He really didn’t think that this was how he was going to start his long hours shift, as he continues to compress his sister’s chest, as he heard one of her ribs break, and he finally felt of his tears roll down his cheek.

“Alright we got a pulse, let’s go!” Gabby yelled. Kelly just nodded, and bit his lip to keep it from trembling. Kelly helped the girls load his sister up in the ambo, and then he turned to his Chief.

“Chief.” He began, but Boden beat him to it.

“Go, we’ll catch up.”

Kelly nodded, and he got in the back with Gabby, who was quickly handing him stuff and telling him what to do, as Sylvie quickly closed the ambo doors and rushed to the driver’s seat and quickly rushed them off.

Kelly looked down, and pressed his forehead against yours. “Please, don’t leave me.” He whispered as he gently kissed her forehead. Gabby glanced at him for a second and went back to checking Y/N’s vitals.

They quickly reached the med, and Kelly saw that Ethan, and April were outside ready to help them, Kelly had gotten off, about to help when he heard Jay screaming out his name, he ignored him and watched as they rushed you in the ER.

“Kelly, how is she?”

Kelly turned and stopped him. “She only went to go pick up the rest of her stuff and talk to you, what happened?” he growled out. Jay paused and stared at him.

“We had another argument, and she broke things off, she took off upset, and crying.” Jay admitted.  

Kelly rubbed his forehead. “You didn’t think to stop her? You know how Y/N gets when she’s upset.” He growled out. Jay tried to say something but shut his mouth, but he stopped before he got another word out. “You know what, go home Jay, I don’t want to even see you right now, and I don’t ever want to see you near my sister.

Jay just watched Kelly go inside the hospital, and he let out a sigh. He knew that this was all his fault, especially since he screwed up everything with Y/N. he let out a small sigh, and turned to walk towards his car, walking away from the future he could’ve have.

So I saw you did an omega verse story. If you are still doing those can you do an alpha reader X omega Jay? Like the unit doesn’t know she’s an alpha when she first starts working there because she hides her mark but after a while when she starts trusting them more she shows her mark and they are all shocked especially Jay?

So I am sending this to myself cause this seems like an interesting idea. I’ve never written Reader x Character before. But I have so many questions about this.. since this is totally a new concept to writing to me, I want to make this accurate for you. 

Alright, so are Reader and Jay already bonded before she comes to Intelligence? I don’t really understand what you mean by mark since Jay would be shocked too. Unless if he’s just shocked that the Alpha is showing the mark. For my Omegaverse stories, I don’t really have a sign that shows your dynamic other than your scent and actions (which in One Chicago, they have a lot better control and it can be hard to tell). Cause if it’s a bond mark, I completely get that and what not. So I’m guessing Jay would just be shocked that she is revealing it. 

I guess I’m thrown off by shocked Jay and the unit not knowing about her being an Alpha. (Which in almost all my AUs, everyone but Kim and Jay are Alphas.) I just want to make sure I get this write for you since it’s out of my normal forte for writing!

‘Where is she?’ You recognised his voice from anywhere, the concern filling it. ‘I’m right here OA, you don’t have to send a search party out.’ You commented, he rolled his eyes as he pulled you in for a hug. ‘I did that one time.’ He sighed. ‘And I won’t let it down, not yet at least.’ You teased him. ‘So I’m not complaining but why are you in Chicago?’ You asked looking up at him, remembering when you had been the same height for maybe a year before he shot up above you over night. ‘Maggie and I have been sent here to work with the local PD team.’ He said, your brows furrowed before you smiled. ‘Maggie’s here?’ You asked, he sighed and nodded before gesturing to his car. You looked around him, before she saw you and you both smiled widely and waved before you looked back to OA. ‘Didn’t you say that your boyfriend worked as a cop?’ OA asked, you nodded. ‘Yup, Jay Halstead, and he’s probably the one that you’ll be working with.’ You told him, he arched an eyebrow. ‘So I finally get to meet him?’ He questioned, you rolled your eyes. ‘You we’re going to meet him next month, stop being so dramatic.’ You warned him, then you watched as the handful of men walked into the hallway. ‘Look, be careful today but I have to go that my client and asshole lawyers.’ You grumbled, OA looked at him before nodding and pressing a kiss to the top of your head. ‘I’ll see you at dinner.’ He said, you nodded as you gathered the information and files you needed.

‘You okay?’ Maggie asked, you nodded as you looked at your boyfriend and brother sharing the same room. ‘Yeah, I know the consequences of what could happen.’ You told them, you then tilted your head to the side. ‘I don’t understand why both of them got hurt though?’ You questioned, turning to her as she smiled. ‘I believe that they were trying to show off to each other, or rather OA was trying to intimidate Jay.’ Maggie explained, footsteps walking closer to the pair of you. ‘Oh yeah, Jay was trying to be cocky and OA was trying to scare him as they were chasing a suspect.’ Hailey said, you closed your eyes and sighed. ‘They aren’t seriously injured?’ You asked, they were sitting on the bed facing each other, knees almost touching but they were upset with each other. ‘Physically, no, their egos definitely.’ Hailey sounded pleased, the three of your smiled before you cleared your throat. ‘I wonder if they’ll tell on each other?’ You asked before pushing away from Hailey and Maggie. Opening the sliding door you watched as they moved their eyes, but didn’t move anything. You shut the door, closing the busy ER out as you walked over to them, you slammed your fists into OA’s bicep and he grunted, before you turned to Jay and repeated the action. Both of them looked at you with wide eyes, holding their arms. ‘What the hell was that for?’ ‘You two are the only men I care about, and your trying to up one and another?’ You asked, their faces dropped, glancing at each other. ‘Do you guys knew the pain I went through when Maggie phoned me, telling me that both of you were in here?’ You asked them, they both shook their heads. ‘You haven’t even known each other for a day and I could seriously kill the pair of you.’ You informed them, watching as their shoulders sagged before your cleared your throat. ‘So I’m going to be the responsible adult.’ You stated, they both looked at you. ‘You,’ you pointed at jay, ‘are banned from sex with me for a week.’ You stated, jay’s jaw dropped and OA started to look smug. ‘And you,’ you pointed at your older brother, since you couldn’t use the same threat on him your had to think of something else, ‘you aren’t getting any more Lebannon maamouls for a month.’ Now it was time for OA’s jaw to drop. ‘Y/N.’ ‘No, in no version of my life do I see my brother and my boyfriend die in the same day. Ever.’ You finished before you turned and quickly walked out. ‘You looked you’ve just killed a puppy in front of them.’ Hailey stated, you looked at the woman before shrugging. ‘Took away what they both love.’ You commented, glancing at the time on the clock. ‘You up for a drink?’ You asked, Hailey and Maggie looked at each other before nodding. ‘What about them?’ Maggie questioned. ‘When they’ve grown up Jay knows where to find me.’ You informed them, before you made your way out the hospital, you and Hailey waving bye to Maggie, who quickly waved back before directing the incoming casualty.

‘Well look what the cat dragged in.’ Hailey stated, placing her drink down and leaning back in the seat. You and Maggie turned around, watching as OA and Jay made their way over to the table, when they stopped at the edge you looked at them. Jay carefully leaned forward and pressed a kiss to the side of your head. ‘Are you done being toddlers?’ You asked, Jay and OA looked at each other before nodding. ‘Good.’ ‘OA I’d like you to meet my boyfriend, Jay.’ You introduced them to each other. ‘Jay, this big idiot is my brother.’ You said, Jay and OA looked at each other again as you and Maggie slid m the booth to make space for them.

Family Cabin.

Requested by Anon – Hi hi. Can I request Jay Halstead x Reader? The reader wasn’t expecting to celebrate Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with Jay because intelligence are in the middle of a big case, but what the reader doesn’t know is that they managed to wrap up the case the day before Christmas Eve so Jay shows up at her door and surprise her with a trip to his family cabin 😊 Characters – Jay x Reader. Word Count – 677.

Placing the half full bottle of cider on the coaster, you had to get for the table because Jay just liked sitting the cups and bottles on it. You didn’t mind but now it was starting to leave small circular stains and you didn’t want to replace the table that you both liked. Picking the remote up and switching the TV on you started flicking through the channels, knowing that you had the night to yourself since Jay had messaged you at lunch time saying that the case the team were working on was going to take longer than they thought. Looking through the Christmas movie selection that was on the TV the cheesy ones were catching your attention but the dark cover with the horn across it did. Clicking on it you snuggled into the cushions and turned the volume up before becoming emerged in the film.

‘I’m home.’ Jay almost shouted as he barged into your apartment, you jumped and the remote falling from your lap and landing on the carpet ‘Jesus Jay.’ You said, placing your hand against your chest feeling your heart beating a hundred miles per hour. ‘What are you doing here?’ You asked him, he ignored you as he walked over to look at the TV. ‘Why are you watching a horror movie before Christmas?’ Jay questioned, as he looked at the screen. ‘Krampus, again?’ He asked, you arched an eyebrow. ‘Yes Jay, because my wuss of a boyfriend wasn’t here.’ You commented back, he narrowed his eyes at you. ‘You still haven’t answered my question.’ You said, he shrugged his shoulders. ‘The case finished up early so I’ve decide to take action and we’re going to the cabin for Christmas.’ Jay told you, your brows furrowed as you bent down and picked the remotes up. ‘What?’ You asked confused, he held his hand out. ‘Come lets go.’ He said, making grabbing hands with his stretched hand. ‘We need to pack.’ You said, gesturing to shared bedroom. ‘No, I packed them last night when you were out with your work friends.’ He said, you narrowed your eyes at him before ‘Can I finish my drink?’ You asked, he rolled his eyes before nodding. You reached forward and picked the bottle up before placing it against your lips and downing the last of the fizzy liquid, Jay pulled a face and his eyebrows raised as you stood up. Making your way to the kitchen to place it in the bin. ‘I think you might have out drank me at school.’ Jay stated, as you turned back to him. ‘I would’ve, still would do it just now.’ You commented, his jaw dropped before he pulled you into him pressing a kiss to your forehead. ‘I would like to see you try but we should get going before it’s too late.’ He mumbled against your forehead, you nodded before you pulled back. ‘Fine, as long as I can chose the music.’ ‘I have the Christmas playlist that you made programmed, it’s ready for us.’ He said, you slid your shoes on before Jay grabbed your jacket, holding it out for you to you slip your arms through the sleeves. ‘I also picked snacks for you.’ He said, watching as you zipped your jacket up. He titled his head slightly before he picked the fluffy hat up, and placed it on your head, pulling it down completely smiling when you started laughing before he helped you fix it, gentle moving the messy strands away from your face. ‘There beautiful.’ He stated, you couldn’t help the blush that took over before you reached up and pressed a kiss to his lips. ‘There handsome.’ You replied, enjoying the way he got flustered every time you called him handsome. ‘You ready?’ He asked, you looked around the apartment, seeing that he had switched the TV off. ‘Yeah, lets go.’ You said, he smiled and opened the door for you, you stepped out first but didn’t let go of his hand as he stepped out and locked the door.

Summary: Walking up 110 flights of stairs in full turnout gear to remember those lost in the 9/11 attacks

Twenty years ago today the 9/11 attacks happened. You and Matt were only teenagers but ever since you two became firefighters and joined the academy each year you climb one hundred and ten flights of stairs to remember those fallen firefighters that lost their lives protecting the city of New York.

This year you had managed to rope Jay into walking the 110 flights of stairs with you and Matt. Although he wouldn't be in full turnout gear he'd still be walking with you both which made you proud because you knew that it's the only day off he's been able to get for a while and he's walking 110 flights of stairs with you.

The only thing you really remember from that day is your mother crying and being sent home from school after the second period. Everything after that watching the news, listening to the radio was all a blur.

Pulling on your turnout gear you zipped it up as Jay finished up his phone call with Will who was on dog-sitting duties for the day. Pulling your oxygen tank on your back Matt placed the hose over the top of the full oxygen tank making your gear around 80 pounds. Walking about soldier fields in 80-pound gear in this heat was going to be torture but it had to be done.

About two hours later and 110 flights of stairs Jay was pealing your gear off your body as Sylvie was doing the exact same to Matt.  "I'm so proud of you for doing this each year," Jay said taking your helmet off your head leaning down to kiss you.

"I'm proud of you daily" You whispered looking up at him. Your head was on his lap as you looked up to him.

"Let's make it fair. We're proud of each other daily" he smiled pushing the flyaways from your bun out of your face

"I agree" You nodded as a volunteer handed you both a bottle of water. You thanked her taking a sip of it. Turning a bad day into a learning experience for all these candidates and other people as well as yourself who didn't know how it felt is the best feeling you could.
