Oooh such a good question! One big this is when characters have a trait or skill that they really respect the other for! Additionally, the way characters resolve conflict is super interesting: things shouldn't always be perfect and they don't always have to be in alignment, but the WAY they resolve that conflict can greaty add to (or detract from) how much chemistry the audience senses between them. For example, characters who just get sassy or dismissive of each other actually greatly detracts from how much chemistry they have. Whereas if characters, even when upset, are willing to pause and at least ATTEMPT (in their own way) to communicate, it shows how deeply two characters care for one another.
Respect is #1 must. Can people even build a relationship without respecting each other or having admiration for something the other one is or does? And it can't be appearance! And yes, resolving conflicts shows so much, you're so right.
