continuing the Reath monster series, this time showing Unicorns

When speaking about unicorns, it is crucial to specify whether you are speaking about the larger, shorter-horned wild variant or the smaller, larger-horned domestic variant. As with most domesticated animals, there is a large difference between the two animals in genetics and personality.

All unicorns are seelie fae, ranging from 75-150lbs, most closely related to goats and deer. Wild unicorns are asexual and hermaphroditic and generally emanate from deep wildlands. While domesticated unicorns exhibit protandrous sequential hermaphroditism, meaning all domestic unicorns are born male, they then become female once they become the oldest and most dominant in their breeding group.

All unicorns are highly intelligent, and while not sapient, they possess a level of intelligence comparable to that of a border collie or a gray parrot. Able to understand and execute simple commands, they are highly independent and prefer the company of mundane animals.

Wild unicorns will only interact with other unicorns rarely when their territories overlap. Domestic unicorns only interact during their breeding seasons around the summer solstice.

Unicorns were domesticated for two reasons: for their use as livestock guardians and for the exploitation of their horns. In modern times, they are generally only used for the former, as Unicorns can detect the intention of creatures and are proficient in protecting mundane animals from magical animals and fae. With their ability to detect intentions, they can also protect their herds from would-be thieves and roughians.

While unicorn horns can increase cellular growth and can encourage the healing of wounds and the reduction of disease, like most cytomancy, this means a linear increase of cancer risk with exposure. The use of unicorn horns and blood in historic healing practices was once considered useful, but it is no longer seen as effective or worth the risk. Even for the use of cytomancy, unicorn horns and blood have a higher potential for cancer when exposed to them compared to modern cytomancy and mundane medicine.
