The Rebuked
This is a unique rank to this warrior cat’s AU, one that contains the dregs of clan society. As of modern times - when this story takes place - only CloudClan still uses this rank. However, at one point in time, punishment was a public matter for both FieldClan and CloudClan and a chastised warrior would have their full name revoked.
In CloudClan, both parts of the name are taken away and replaced with the color or pattern that best suits their pelt. Their suffix will likewise be replaced with -pelt and -fur, seen as ordinary and unremarkable. Their title in the clan is immediately taken away and they become known as a rebuked cat. When FieldClan still had this rank, they only took away the suffix of the warrior during Rebuke, leaving their prefix as their only remaining name. The impact, however, was equivalent in both clans.
Apprentices are hardly ever, if at all, rebuked; they are not seen as mature individuals with the same responsibilities as warriors and, thus, can grow through their mistakes. A warrior could become rebuked by their clan through a few of the following events:
The death of their apprentice,
This is consistently seen as negligence on the part of the warrior
Fleeing from a fight through cowardice.
The level of cowardice would be assessed by the severity of injuries on the fleeing cat
Insubordination, depending on the severity of the action taken
Disobeying a direct order during battle would cause rebuke
General disrespect for your authorities won’t make one any friends or carry you far, but there is no punishment for this
Taking a mate from another clan
Falsifying signs from StarClan
Exile still exists but it is reserved for only the most heinous of crimes: a murder or betrayal will deem a cat unfit for clan life and they will be treated as an enemy and killed on site after exile.
The existence of the Rebuked is a lonely one; the social stigma that stems from this rank creates a crippling and isolating feeling for those within it. Family members cut off ties from Rebuked cats, mates break up, and kits and apprentices are ushered away from the den they reside in and warned to never interact with the individuals inside of it. In such a setting where clan society emphasizes interpersonal interactions, becoming a Rebuked cat is essentially a death warrant.
The Rebuked still perform normal duties, but much more on the side of physical labor. They mostly hunt, as they are no longer allowed to participate in border patrols, and will participate in battles should the need arise. Despite this, they remain last on the social ladder to get food, and are the first to starve during times of strife. They are responsible for keeping the camp clean – picking up after kits and apprentices, renewing bedding and gathering supplies. The Rebuked who fail to do these tasks are ultimately cast out of the clan and are never welcome to return.
Those who have been rebuked by the clan can retain their title through proving themselves in battle or as loyal warriors, but they never seem to obtain the status they used to have.
I Will Give You Thanks with All My Heart
1 Lord, I will thank you with all my heart. I will sing to you before the false gods. 2 I will bow down facing your holy Temple. And I will thank you for your love and loyalty. You have made your name and your word greater than anything. 3 On the day I called to you, you answered me. You made me strong and brave.
4 Lord, let all the kings of the earth praise you. They have heard the words you speak. 5 They will sing about what the Lord has done because the Lord’s glory is great.
6 Though the Lord is supreme he takes care of those who are not proud. But he stays away from those who are proud. 7 Lord, even when I have trouble all around me, you will keep me alive. When my enemies are angry, you will reach down and save me by your power. 8 Lord, you do everything for me. Lord, your love continues forever. You made us. Do not leave us. — Psalm 138 | International Children’s Bible (ICB) The Holy Bible, International Children’s Bible® Copyright© 1986, 1988, 1999, 2015 by Thomas Nelson. Israel's Adultery Rebuked
8 But she would not acknowledge that I gave her the grain, the new wine, and the fresh oil. I gave her large amounts of silver and gold—her people used it for Baal! 9 That is why I will take back my grain during harvest time, and my new wine in its season. I will also take away my wool and my flax that were given to cover her nakedness. — Hosea 2:8-9 | Evangelical Heritage Version (EHV) The Holy Bible, Evangelical Heritage Version®, EHV®, © 2019 Wartburg Project, Inc.
