Chapter 1
Messages unseen
The city lights flickered through the rain splattered windows of Namjoon's small apartment casting a splash of colors across the walls. The room was dimly lit by a single desk lamp, its soft yellow glow creating long shadows that loomed on the walls. The faint hum of distant traffic and the occasional honk of a horn were the only sounds that broke the heavy silence that had settled over in the room.
Namjoon sat at his desk, his elbows resting on the worn wood his fingers absentmindedly turning over the Third envelope he'd received this week. The paper was coarse, slightly damp from the humidity and completely nondescript no address, no stamp, just his name written in red with a precise and neat script. He flipped it over his gaze fixed on the crimson wax seal that held it shut. The seal was simple yet it had an air of old world and elegance. A circular emblem was pressed into the wax edges slightly raised catching the light just enough to cast a tiny shadow on the envelope. He traced the pattern with his thumb, feeling the grooves of the design. It was fragile elegant almost like a family crest, though Namjoon knew it was nothing he'd seen before. He'd spent hours searching through books and online databases trying to find a match but the symbol remained a mystery.
A shiver ran down his spine though the room was warm. These envelopes were beginning to feel like more than just a nuisance. They were a puzzle, a riddle he was desperate to solve but they filled him with a creeping sense of unease. Each time he found one in his mailbox or slipped under his door his stomach tightened and his mind raced with questions. Who was sending them? What did they want? And why him?He let out a sigh the sound barely audible over the rain. He could feel the tension coiling in his muscles the weight of the unanswered questions pressing down on him. He'd been through his usual mental exercises to calm himself, deep breaths, logical thinking, grounding techniques but not tonight they seemed less effective. His mind was too restless too caught up in the endless possibilities of what the envelopes could mean.
"Namjoon?"
Your voice broke through the silence like a gentle breeze soft and full of concern. You stood in the doorway of the small bedroom one hand resting on the doorframe the other clutching the edge of your sweater. Your eyes always so expressive were filled with a mixture of worry and affection as you watched him. Namjoon had always admired that about you, how you could see right through him past the walls he sometimes put up.
He looked up at you his lips curving into a small almost apologetic smile. "Another one" he said holding up the envelope for you to see. His voice was calm but there was frustration evident in it that you didn't miss.
You walked over to him your footsteps barely making a sound on the wooden floor. As you reached his side you brushed a hand gently against his shoulder offering him a touch of comfort. He leaned into it slightly, grateful for your presence. You peered at the envelope your eyes searching for many things as you took in the familiar sight of the crimson seal.
"Empty again?" you asked though you already knew the answer.
"Yeah " he sighed his fingers tightening around yours "But there’s something more to it. I just know."
Your gaze lingered on the seal, the same thought crossing your mind as had crossed Namjoon's countless times what was the significance of this emblem? The sender had gone to great lengths to ensure that each envelope was identical, each seal perfectly intact each piece devoid of any information except for that damned symbol. Smart you thought
You leaned down pressing a gentle kiss to Namjoon's temple. Your eyes leaving the envelope after lingering there for more seconds than you actually thought. The warmth of your lips against his skin was opposite to the coldness he felt from the envelope in his hand. "You'll figure it out" you murmured your voice filled with quiet confidence. "You always do."
Namjoon closed his eyes for a moment letting the comfort of your words sink in. He wanted to believe that he wanted to trust in his own abilities to solve whatever this was. But the uncertainty gnawed at him like a splinter lodged in his mind. He opened his eyes again staring at the envelope as if suddenly it would reveal all its secrets
"Have you thought about going to the police?" you asked your tone careful. You knew how fiercely independent Namjoon was how much he disliked involving others in his personal matters. Moreover, He himself was a detective in the criminal investigation branch not the top echelon of Korea’s law enforcement but a respected position nonetheless. He was used to dealing with mysteries to deciphering the hidden intentions behind seemingly innocuous details. But these envelopes had thrown him off balance.
"I've thought about it" he admitted, "but what would I even say? 'Someone's sending me empty envelopes with weird seals on them'? They'd probably just brush it off as a prank.
"You couldn't argue with that. The lack of any real threat or evidence made it difficult to justify involving the authorities. And yet, the feeling in your gut told you that this was something more than a harmless joke. You wished you had more to offer Namjoon than just reassurance, but for now that would have to be enough.
Namjoon placed the envelope on the desk alongside the others. They were all lined up in a neat row like a collection of strange artifacts. He had resisted the urge to destroy them feeling that they held some key to the mystery. He had inspected them thoroughly, looking for any hidden messages or any signs that they were more than they seemed but they remained stubbornly silent.
"Maybe..." Namjoon began, hesitating as he considered his next words. "Maybe there's something I'm missing. Something that's right in front of me but I just can't see it."
You nodded, "take a break. Let your mind rest and then look at it with fresh eyes. It might Just be right there'' you said.
"I'll try" he said though both of you knew it was more of a hopeful statement than a commitment.
Just like that the stars faded into the sky and the moon lost its light, but the messages remained unseen.
