This weekend I had the great fortune to stumble upon the Adventure Play Garden. It’s a space dedicated to supporting open-ended, child-directed play. Risk-taking is possible. Collaborative social problem solving abounds. It reminded me of Wild Lilac...but it’s open on Saturdays!
The Adventure Play Garden is located at 13949 SE Stark St. They are currently open for free Play Days on Saturdays, from 10 am - 2 pm. The location is a large city lot, an old organic farm; now it is a huge field overgrown with tall grasses, wild flowers, and feral vegetables. There are all sorts of amazing loose parts, from wood pallets to rope to giant cardboard tubes. There’s a giant mud pit in the middle, with hoses and shovels and more. It’s all free, by donation, and the folks running the project are quite welcoming and friendly.
The video above is from Vernon Elementary School in northeast Portland. Portland Free Play, the small nonprofit organization behind the Play Garden, is also starting to partner with local elementary schools to provide Play Pods -- large storage containers filled with loose parts. With them, children transform recess.
If you are a parent of an elementary school student (or soon-to-be kindergartner), ask your new school’s principal if they’ve heard of Portland Free Play and pass this video along to them. Children of all ages need more of these opportunities in their daily lives at school. In the meantime, Cypress and Wally hope to see you at the Adventure Play Garden on a Saturday this summer!
