I started watching the 5th season of the Crown. I find thsi show fascinating because of the exploration of roles and identities. The crown itself is the hidden character of the series, an invisible specter, entity, egregore that brings its own weight to everything.
The danger of a role is that it can take on an identity of its own that overshadows the identity of the person who takes it on. The role becomes the person. I've noted this effect with celebrities of various types in my pop culture magic series. The roles/personas they took on took them over, and the result is a very ungrounded person who can't handle the role and all the energy and attention put toward the role.
This is one reason I'm very careful about the roles I take on...and why I make a point to de-role as needed. I never want the role to on so much of a life of its own that controls the quality or experience of my life...and yet I also want to draw on the role as needed. In Pop Culture Magic 2.0 I discussed the concept of experience taking, where the assumption of a role provides you access to related experiences. We indulge in experience taking to some degree or another on a regular basis. Whether its through reading a book, watching a program, playing a game or doing some other kind of activity we end up taking on roles and those roles bring experiences with them that can be useful or harmful or both to us depending on how we ground the role and/or allow it access to our lives.
I've used experience taking to learn skills from various roles and incorporate them into my overall identity. I then de-role from the identity but still retain those skills. If you find this process fascinating and would like to learn about it live from me, comment below.
