Hindu Mythology & Deities - The Gods of Rig Vedic Period (22)- Yama, God of Death

Yama is a Hindu god of death, the south direction, and the underworld, belonging to an early stratum of Rigvedic Hindu deities. In Sanskrit, his name can be interpreted to mean "twin".

Yama is the son of sun-god Surya and Saranyu the daughter of Tvastar. Yama is the brother of Sraddhadeva Manu and of his twin sister Yami. According to the Vedas, Yama is said to have been the first mortal who died. By virtue of precedence, he became the ruler of the departed.

In Puranas, Yama is described as having four arms, protruding fangs, and complexion of storm clouds with a wrathful expression; surrounded by a garland of flames; dressed in red, yellow, or blue garments; holding a noose and a mace or sword; and riding a water-buffalo. He wields a noose with which he seizes the lives of people who are about to die.

閻魔、死の神

ヤマは仏教で言う閻魔の事であり、南を司る神である。仏教、ヒンドゥー教などでの地獄、冥界の主。 冥界の王として死者の生前の罪を裁く神。 日本の仏教においては地蔵菩薩の化身とみなされ同一視されている。 閻王ともいう。

リグ・ヴェーダでは、ヤマと双子の妹ヤミーはスーリヤの子で、母はトヴァシュトリの娘サラニューとされた。 ヤマは人間で最初の死者となり、死者が進む道を見いだした。そして死者の国の王となった。虚空のはるか奥に住むという。インドでは、古くは生前によい行いをした人は天界にあるヤマの国に行くとされた。そこは死者の楽園であり、長寿を全うした後にヤマのいる天界で祖先の霊と一体化することは、理想的な人生だと考えられていた。 しかし後代には、赤、黄色または青い衣を着て頭に冠を被り、水牛に乗って現れる。手に捕縄を持ち、それによって死者の霊魂を縛り、自らの住処・国に連行されると考えられた。ヤマの世界は地下だとされ、死者を裁き、生前に悪行をなした者を罰する恐るべき神と考えられるようになった。

- The Gods of Rig Vedic Period (20)- Vritra

Vritra is a Vedic serpent or dragon in  Hinduism, the personification of drought and adversary of Indra. Vritra is identified as an Asura. Vritra was also known in the Vedas as Ahi (snake). He appears as a dragon blocking the course of the rivers and is heroically slain by Indra.

This particular myth of a storm god like Indra slaying a monster serpent is present in many Indo-European cultures. For example, the Norse storm god Thor slays the world serpent Jörmungandrand the Greek sky and weather god Zeus battles the serpentine Typhon. In addition, this myth extends beyond Indo-European cultures, being found as far afield as Japanese Shintoism, where the storm god Susano'o slays the eight-headed serpent Yamata-no-Orochi.

ヴリトラ

ヴリトラは、リグ・ヴェーダなどで伝えられる巨大な蛇の怪物、又は龍である。その名は「障害」「遮蔽物 (しゃへいぶつ)」「囲うもの」を意味し、「天地を覆い隠すもの」とも呼ばれる。マハーバーラタにおいては、別名にアスラなどがある。その姿は蛇のほか、雲や蜘蛛だとも描写される。

水を閉じ込めて旱魃（かんばつ）を起こすとされている。インドラ神とは敵対関係にあり、インドラに殺されることとなる。

ヴリトラとインドラの戦いは、古い時代の新年祭において世界の再生を象徴する儀礼を構成していたとも考えられている。また、自然現象を神格化したものとも考えられている。

印欧文化圏では、このような雷神による「蛇の怪物退治」の伝説は数多く存在している。例えば、北欧神話の雷神・トールによる毒蛇の怪物・ヨルムンガンド退治、全宇宙を破壊できるほど強力な雷を武器とするギリシャ神話の天空神・ゼウスとテューポーンの戦いなどが挙げられる。

日本の神道でも、スサノオのヤマタノオロチ退治は有名だ。

Mitra, in the pantheon of Vedic Hinduism, sovereign principles of the universe. As one of the sons of Aditi in the category of Adityas, he runs in the sky on the sun chariot during the month of June.  

He represents friendship, integrity, harmony, and all else that is important in the successful maintenance of order in human existence.

He is usually paired with the god Varuna, the guardian of the cosmic order, whose powers he complements as guardian of the human order.  His Iranian counterpart is Mithra, who eventually came to be worshipped as the god of one of the great mystery religions, Mithraism.

ミトラ

ミトラは、宇宙の絶対法則、古代インドヴェーダのパンテオン、アディティの産んだ十二柱の太陽神（アーディティヤ神群）の一柱で、毎年6月の一カ月間、太陽戦車に乗って天空を駆けるという。

彼は、友情、忠実、協調、そして人間として成功を収めるのに重要な要素すべてを象徴する。また、同じくアーディティヤ神群の一柱であるヴァルナとは表裏一体を成すとされる。共に宇宙の秩序、また人間の秩序を見守り、とりしまる守護神とされる。

Ushas

Ushas means dawn in Sanskrit. She is a goddess of dawn and shining morning, revealing herself with the daily coming of light to the world, driving away oppressive darkness, chasing away evil demons, rousing all life, setting all things in motion, sending everyone off to do their duties.

Ushas is the most exalted goddess in the Rig Veda. She is variously mentioned as the daughter of Dyaus (Sky), younger sister of Ratri (night), Aditya and one who goes about her ways closely with deities Savitri and Surya. She is also associated with Varuna (sky, water) and Agni (fire).

She is portrayed as a beautifully adorned young woman riding in a golden chariot or a hundred chariots, drawn by golden red horses or cows, on her path across the sky, making way for the Vedic sun god Surya.  Some of the most beautiful hymns in the Vedas are dedicated to her.

She is known as Marci in Buddhism.

ウシャス

ウシャスは、サンスクリット語で夜明けを意味し、夜明けの光を神格化したインド神話における暁紅の女神である。天空神ディヤウスの娘で、夜の女神ラートリーの妹。太陽神スーリヤの母あるいは恋人といわれる。

リグ・ヴェーダに登場する女神の中では最も多くの讃歌を持ち、ラートリーのほかに、スーリヤ、アグニ、アシュヴィン双神と結びつけられている。美しい女神であるウシャスは、太陽神スーリヤの先駆であり、闇を払い、あらゆる生命を眠りより覚まし、活動を促す。

ウシャスは赤い馬もしくは赤い牝牛の牽く戦車に乗り、後を追うスーリヤが彼女を抱きしめると消滅するが、翌朝には、天則（リタ）に従い、方角を誤らず、再び美しい肌を現すとされる。

仏教においては、摩利支天菩薩のことである。
