Pete clings to this loop as long as he can, feeling light and free now that Ray knows the truth. There’s no secrets left between them on this walk; at one point, maybe Day 3, Ray asks if Pete will sing for him once they get out of this. Pete sends him over a slanted grin and insists he’ll perform with a guitar and piano and everything if he can play Ray’s instrument, too, after. Ray turns red as an August-ripened tomato, but he does reply, “I think I’d like that.” They both get warnings because Pete celebrates their would-be date by leading Ray through a waltz. When they separate, wheezing and halfway hysterical, Barkovitch is putting down his camera and calling them queers and Harkness is scribbling furiously in his notebook.
