Action Plan: Primary Research
In this research I will be focusing solely on issues of class, gender, race, ethnicity, and any other social issues that might arise. I will be identifying these issues by researching a brief background on the author and their award winning novels that have won them these prizes.
*I have decided to focus on fiction narratives in order to conduct my research. Therefore, I will not be including children's fiction, biographies or poetry. This is because The Booker Prize only awards fiction narratives and I want to compare my findings as closely as possible.*
This could I go one of two ways: I will be able to identify enough social issues from these award winning novels or I won't be able to find much, i.e. the narratives are predominantly white and heteronormative. Therefore, I can only present very minimal research. Either way, I should still be able to make a conclusion from either one of these outcomes.
Author: do these social issues affect the authors personally? I.e. do they belong to a minority group or are they privileged? Do they speak up about these issues?
Books: [main focus] a very brief narrative background of the novel. Are social issues reflected in the authors work? I.e. what are the themes? Are their any non-white, non-heteronormative characters (this might be harder to determine without having a full understanding of the book).
