Rhaun shirt with process ฅ^。ꞈ。^ฅ ∘˚˳°
front and back ⤴︎ tools used:
a shit texta(the texta washes out completely)
alcohol markers - the staying power of these depends on brand and what colour. I used Born. & Copic alcohol markers.
fabric markers - I used edding textile markers
acrylic paint
I used the shit texta to sketch a little and mark out different parts of the design. once I was happy I took the textile markers to block out parts of Rhaun and the design behind him, around the edge of Rhaun I used a textile marker to block out the design then used the alcohol markers to fill in the extra space. I used this method to save ink, I had an abundance of orange textile markers but only one grey one so I used it sparingly. The alcohol pens have less staying power and fade a little but I can tolerate that if it means I can distribute the last of the grey ink over the whole shirt.
Between every photo I ironed the shirt to set the textile markers and see how they turn out. There is a slight difference between the colour before and after the ink is set. The brown lost some redness so I started using a matching brown alcohol marker to fill in space and the orange became a lot brighter in some places so I started using another even brighter orange to make it pop even more. after two passes with the markers I mixed some blue and black acrylic paint and heavily diluted it with water - key word HEAVILY, if the paint isn't diluted enough it makes the fabric stiff and you have to pray to the washing machine to clean your sins away. I left the shirt out to dry and kept myself busy for an hour (ง ᵕωᵕ)ว
once dry I started on the back and used the pre - existing design on the shirt to guide me and began layering a dark blue over the set orange and grey to add more detail. (yes the acrylic does change marker application a little, no it doesn't affect the staying power or vibrancy)
When I brought it back in I decided I wanted more blue and did this spiky design behind everything else. I layered up the orange and grey more and generally touched things up on the front with the back I took out the shit texta again to sketch out what I wanted then I free-handed Rhaun's head in blue + more spikes on the back.
I wasn't sure if I was happy with the dyejob so I mixed some grey, blue silver paint. I splattered it while trying to keep it away from the more detailed bits of the design and put the shirt out to dry again.
in the final stretch I decided that Rhaun's head on the back meant the sleeve needed to be blue so I ran my marker dry and used from alcohol pens to buff it up. then I did my final touch upヾ( ˃ᴗ˂ )◞ • *✰
the last step in the process is a soak to get rid of the extra colour. I filled the sink with cold water and a quarter scoop of detergent and let the shirt sit for two hours.
this was the final result its soft, its vibrant and I love it ✧。٩(ˊᗜˋ )و✧*。
