I have no idea what happened to our rice-filled hot pack, & Mr P was having shoulder pain, so I said screw it & sewed one up. It's super easy (instructions in the read more) and I had it done in under an hour.
1 fat quarter (all cotton)
~ 5 cups plain white rice, uncooked
100% cotton thread
walking foot (optional but recommended)
Trim fat quarter so edges are straight. From short end, cut two 2" wide strips
Prepare each strip as if making bias tape (fold in half lengthwise & press. Open out, fold raw edges to meet crease & press. Fold again on crease & stitch 1/8" from each long edge)
Fold remainder of fat quarter in half lengthwise & make tiny snip on edges of fold to mark centers.
Pin handles to short edges approximately 2" from top edge & center marks (I used 3 fingers to measure) on right side of fabric, adjusting so handles are desired length.
Fold fat quarter in half lengthwise. Using a 1/2" seam, stitch short sides, leaving top (long edge) open and backstitching over handles.
Trim seam to about 1/4", cutting any excess from handles
With wrong sides together, fold top edges down about 1/2" to 3/4" & press
Turn right side out
Stitch 5-1/4" from each short end to form three pockets
Fill first pocket with about 1-2/3 cup rice & pin or clip shut. Repeat with second pocket, and then with third. (Pinning/clipping before moving to the next pocket will help prevent spilling)
Carefully stitch the pockets closed about 1/4" from edge, backstitching at start & finish. Clip threads, and stitch over or close to first seam for extra security.
Clean up all the rice you inevitably spilled while making the project
Warm pack by heating in microwave for 1-2 minutes. Take care not to overheat it so as to prevent burns. It's important that the fabric & thread are 100% cotton, as polyester can melt in the microwave.
I really really like the feeling of my cat lying of my chest while I'm lying down. He weighs 15 pounds and is very soft. But I can't force him to stay there, it's only when he wants to. Does anyone know of a good alternative to get the same/a similar feeling? I've thought about getting a weighted stuffed animal but those are pretty expensive.
I’m sorry we’re only getting to your question now.
How about a rice pillow? The rice would give it weight, while the warmth (they can be warmed up in the microwave) could mimick your cat’s body heat. They come in different sizes and shapes depending on your needs. You can also make them yourself. There are several instructions on how to make rice pillows online, such as this one.
Making them yourself may have the advantage of being cheaper and being able to choose size, weight and outside material yourself. You could even try to use faux-fur or similarly fluffy or soft materials to resemble your cat’s fur.
If you have any allergies or can’t deal with the smell of rice, that is something to keep in mind though.
