I hate how Age of Scorpius portrays Avia as this lazy bitch, meanwhile she and Rowan are the only ones who actually have real jobs.

Avia and Rowan are supporting the family and working hard jobs, meanwhile the unnamed mother doesn’t seem to do jack shit. And Rieka is a historian trainee???

She never has a shift, doesn’t seem to have a boss of any kind, she doesn’t have to check in or be accountable to anyone, she literally can take pleasure hikes all day long and occasionally just report her findings.

No pay, no contribution to the household. In fact she selfishly trashes the house Rowen and Avia are paying for, then cops a nasty ass additude when she’s asked to do basic tasks like read the notes her mom leaves her or prepare a dress.

Later on based on how they yell at Avia to get back to the kitchen it’s obvious that she’s doing all of the cooking at home too.

And given how Reika just throws her shit down all around the house like a slob, Avia also likely has to do all of the cleaning too.

Reika is a total spoiled brat.

Avia works a loooong shift. She’s working so much she has to delay her own graduation. Then she does all the cooking and cleaning. And had the pressure from her parents to be responsible for her sister. This is text book parentification.

Then Reika comes home from her pleasure strolls and sees Avia laying down or sleeping like a rock at 3am and calls her lazy and has a smug sense of superiority about it.

Like Winters is trying so hard to demonize Avia to make Reika look good throughout the book and and it’s backfiring miserably.

Some Things I Liked

AOS was far from a perfect novel, but I wanted to share lines/interactions that I liked or amused me. Warning- has spoilers!

"Did she just walk over a border without a second thought?” Chase asked quietly as we followed her. “Is she always like this?”

“Aries. It’s the no fear thing. Welcome to hell.” (Chase & Rieka, Pg. 103)

- That's totally something a sibling would say, ha.

He wore a black suit, his gray hair and eyes complementing his empty style. The only color in his demeanor was a bright crimson Scorpio glyph on his suit jacket. (Pg. 119)

Avia took a chair, turned it around, and sat down. What was with her inability to sit in a chair normally? (Pg. 141)

“You blasted a dude across the room with a zodiac wheel!” Avia yelled, bending over to rub her fist on the top of my head. I swatted her away. “And all this time, we’ve been antagonizing you for your shitty shapeshifting!”

“You’re a Zodiac Turner?” Kaia asked.

“Not to my knowledge,” I said.

“It’s definitely to your knowledge now,” Chase added. (Pg. 156)

Anger contorted her expressions, accented by the fiery hues covering her image. I struggled to look away.

“Rieka?” Avia said. “Just to remind you, that’s your assassin you’re staring at.” (Pg. 161)

“Yeah, and? I saw the look on your face. A pretty girl trying to murder me would fluster even me, and I’m not easily flustered.” (Avia, Pg. 169)

“Yeah. Not entirely sure how I healed you so well, though.”

“It felt warm,” she said. “I liked it.”

“Was that a compliment? Maybe you need more healing. You must be ill.” (Chase & Avia, Pg. 188)

Chase draped it over his shoulders, looking down at Avia. “Wake up, we need to leave before your sister loses her mind.”

“What are you talking about? She lost it a long time ago.”

I rolled my eyes and walked out of the cavern with Kaia. (Pg. 199)

“Are you sure we should just approach foreign objects that quickly?” Kaia asked.

I shrugged. “Been doing it this whole time and haven’t died yet.”

She pointed at Chase. “He is the only reason you guys are alive.” (Pg. 201)

- It made me think of Astarion’s, “I thought we’d just go in and create chaos. It’s worked for us so far.”

“Didn’t Cancer play a role in that myth? It’s been a while since I last heard someone talk about it.”

“Kaia, no, you just asked the wrong person the wrong thing,” Avia said with a deep sigh. “Please, no-” (Pg. 203)

“Questioning everything is how I get answers,” I said, staring off into the dark abyss. (Avia & Rieka, Pg. 205)

- This was supposed to be a serious moment, but it amuses me so much.

The Healers fell to the gravesites they were meant to prevent… (pg. 272)

- I just like this line.

“You fool. How dare you try to save your people when the cause of their peril exists in your own blood?” (Pg. 289)

- Another line that I liked.

I could feel how much Narah cared, how badly she wanted to ease my pain. It was the most soothing sensation I’d ever experienced, the gentle mending of the torn skin on my back, the emotion carrying from her heart to mine [...] (Pg. 295)

SAFE TO TOUCH.

I laughed to myself, wondering which one of them had to write on the handle of the Callexus that it was, in fact, safe to hold. (Pg. 351)

She was beautiful in the light of the full Moon. Her white hair was slightly astray [...]. My eyes traced the curvature of her jaw and caught on the faint glimmer and glow in her skin, as if she was meant to be viewed in the moment, in the moonlight. (Rieka toward Narah, Pg. 400)
