RESSLER: now, at one point you leave gramma's. why did you do that?
DAHMER: well, i just thought that after spending eight years with her, by that time, i felt it was time to get my own place, where i wouldn't be so restricted. i continued the month's rent, did the yard work, shoveling snow, and she made me meals, so when i got my own place, it worked out nicely. we helped out each other.
RESSLER: and the first place you got was—?
DAHMER: twenty-fourth street. and that's when i took that picture of [the first laotian victim]. i never intended to hurt him.
RESSLER: this was a young guy, wasn't he? how old was he?
DAHMER: thirteen, fourteen. i thought he was older. you know, asian guy can be twenty-one, and still look like he's a young
RESSLER: yeah, they can. what prompted that?
DAHMER: it was sunday morning. walking along the street. wanted some sexual activity. saw him. an attractive guy. offered him fifty dollars for some pictures. He agreed. i took two pictures, gave him the drink, and thought he was out. He got away, and the police came.
RESSLER: so that backfired on you? you were arrested, and all. that's a matter of history.
DAHMER: mmm-hmm. we went back, the detective and i, to the apartment. they did a search. they never did find that skull i had, in a lower chest of drawers in the hallway. but they did find everything else.
RESSLER: how did they miss that?
DAHMER: it was under clothes, and all. so they missed the bags back in ohio, and now, missed the skull.
RESSLER: sloppy police work. if they'd found that, it would've changed things considerably, huh?
DAHMER: yeah. and getting out of the hotel room like i did. not too usual. luck.
so weird to hear Ressler being called “Bob”
