absolutely insane about that eridian culture headcanon i read in a fic once where eridians each have 5 mates, one for each hand to hold. and their mate circle is essentially an elaborate friend group. eridians do not feel romance in the way that humans do. they feel friendship, and love, but not romance. so eridian “mates” are really, in human terms, queerplatonic partners. tears of joy streaming down my face

Concept: Grace makes a paper "thank-you card" for Stratt and sends it on an autonomous craft from Erid not long after landing there, along with scientific information and gifts and stuff from the people of Erid. It says:

Stratt,

Thanks for stealing my life from me.

Found a pretty decent new one, if you were wondering.

And it has several Polaroids in it (Ilyukhina brought a Polaroid camera, obviously, she is a cutesy millennial) of his friends and his biodome on Erid.

One of them is a shirtless selfie with Adrian and Rocky and it's like. It's just vague enough she can't tell why. Maybe it's super super hot, even in his biodome?? Maybe all his shirts are torn already? But it also looks sorta... not very platonic? So she'll have to wonder, for the rest of her life: is Grace up there, 16 light-years away, orbiting 40-Eridani, having sex with aliens? Making a whole lotta different kinds of First Contact? And she will never get an answer :)

This is a Rocky-and-Grace-fake-date-to-make-Adrian-jealous story no one was asking for that I promptly delivered.

Rocky and Grace are finally on Erid, but Rocky's marriage is, well, on the rocks, and that's putting it nicely.

“I was gone for seventy years. I don't exactly have that many. It's also a big ask. And you're kinda my guy for big asks, you know? Although you already saved my life, so—"

"No, of course! I'll help you."

To be loved is to be changed

Grace having mate/purpose/name tattoos via scarification. Grace having his mates rock colors on him in form of jewelry and dangling necklaces that chime and make noise like a cat bell. Grace returning to earth completely changed, almost alien, and better for it. Near unrecognizable to people who once knew him. His speech patterns slightly off, his hearing excellent, his eyes adjusted to permanent low light. Spans of tiny scratches across his arms and body permanently marking him Eridian. His name, his mates, his purpose, the petrova line connecting sol to tau ceti, thus connecting grace to rocky, permanently etched on his being. His left arm disfigured and scarred from the Eridian atmosphere, a permanent reminder of what he was willing to sacrifice for rocky, a purpose tattoo in and of itself. TO BE LOVED IS TO BE CHANGED

Erid gave Grace a home in the way Earth never could, with no expectations of a human society that shunned Grace and left him outcast- an alien among his own species. Hes more at home among real aliens than he ever was on Earth. And if- when- he returns to that blue planet he will be more alien than ever, but belonging more than he ever did.

Rocky waited forty years on the Blip-A. Grace was born and grew in that time, and though neither of them knew it, they were waiting waiting waiting for eachother to come home.
