Some Girls Bind by Rory James

I received a free eARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I liked this book. It's a hi-lo reading format, which means it's a high interest topic in a low level vocabulary, which as a person who is studying TESOL is really nice to read. The main character, Jamie, is binding her chest and questioning her gender.

The story is interesting and I was excited that I knew where it took place. Although the name of the town was never mentioned, it is in the area I grew up in.

My only complaint with this book is the formatting, which I hope will be fixed before the publication date. There were 2 chapters that repeated 3 times, no numbers were given (any numbers were just blank spaces), and there were a few words that just looked like someone punched a keyboard. Also, since it was a novel in verse, some of the stanzas started halfway across the page, which is fine, but some words got cut off, so the beginning of a word would be on the right side of the page, and the rest of the word would be on the left side.

I had to give this book a 3 star rating based on the formatting, but if that is fixed, I would be happy to change it to a 5 star review.

Rory James

Willow's husband and Edwina's father.

Like Willow, Rory once applied the job of the train driver after graduated.

In the past, his family's train is a black tender train with a wooden brake. After the accident, it rebuilt with a steel brake and painted in the red livery.

Rory has a large burn scar on his right leg on the accident. It always make him reminds of the past and being careful on the railway job.

He once was prideful and vain. He likes to showing off his red train to others, particularly to those who appear old-fashioned, weak, slow or dirty. This cause him to have a rivalry to Willow, Jerry, Talia and more.

Through the year, Rory was work hard on the railway. His vanity still reached on the point, such as he was jealous of Willow to got the job of pulling present train on the Christmas.

He sometimes takes scolding from others to make his penny drop, and even then it is too late to prevent trouble.

Still, Rory showed a caring side to him. He has a heart of gold and wants to help anyone in his time of need.

Rory has a power to manipulate the gemstones. He uses a magic to decorate his brooch for the ball. Sometimes he uses it for protection.

In particular, whenever he sneezes, his magic will uncontrollable and spawns gradient gems.

Even as a child of the James family, Rory never minded his whole body at times, even his train splashed with mud. It only during a special job, he have to faced a dilemma.

As for his relationship, Rory once crush on Willow, because he likes her cute face and sweet personalities.

Sadly, he delays confessing his love to her after discovering that Willow and Lucien are dating.

Two years later, he hears that the lovebirds have broken up and that Willow is dating Emmett, but the same process with Lucien.

When Rory was ordered by the railway controller to work with Willow, he was very happy but still to be rivalry to Willow.

Such as in the winter, he is teamed with Willow to clear a path through the snow to Knapford.

But, somehow he merely crush on her when looked at Willow's eyes. He didn't confess his love yet, he was flustered in mind and his face was blushing as red as his train's paintcoat.

Rory take a break during the holidays. He sit in the cafe to have a peace, but then saw Willow who came to buy a cake. He heard what she said no enough money to buy, so he took a chance to help her.

When sent the cake to the orphanage, the children and the caretakers were happily thanked to Willow and Rory.

Once deliver the cake to the children, Rory is finally asked by Willow for go on a date.

They hangouts for many years. Eventually, they marries and have Russell, Edwina and Jolin.

My second review over on Wordpress. Still getting a feel for the writing that I want to do, so the reviews are short and to the point for now. Both books are definitely worth checking out though.
