I was watching a weather report and worrying about friends who are camping and LARPing this weekend when it’s going to be -6C then I got the sickest feeling in my gut these guys are LARPing. If it gets to much they can get in a car and drive home. The have access to a scout hut then can sleep in if necessary and loads of food and hot drinks.
What about the people out there, within half a mile of my own house who are sleeping rough and fighting to get in to over crowded shelters. They have no escape from it other than drinking enough or shooting up and hoping they don’t feel a thing.
And there is nothing I can do for them.
Sure I’ve given money to the local charities. I give my loose change to people begging. But there is nothing I can do. I can’t leave my house right now. I can’t physically go and pick people up and bring them home and feed them and keep them warm.
And that is awful. And even if I did somehow find a way to rescue even one street sleeper tonight it wouldn’t fix the problem. They wouldn’t suddenly have somewhere to live, the support to get clean and find a job and build a life. It wouldn’t extend to every homeless person in the country.
There is just so much to do and we are struggling with even the emergency response of getting people in to emergency shelters. We don’t even have sticking plaster solution: if we want to use the first aid analogy then we are barely managing to hold a filthy rag to a bleeding wound.

Streetlink is a nation wide organisation that helps get rough sleepers in to a shelter or emergency accommodation. They have an app you can download to alert them if you see somebody sleeping rough so that they can send a local team to help them find a bed.
