Some hiccstrid moments

What happened to Astrid in season five?
(Sorry again, my English is still lame)
Reviewing the "Dawn of Destruction" series, I noticed one interesting detail: when receiving accusations from friends, Hiccup always tried to smooth out the sharp corners and somehow justify himself. Astrid didn't do that. On the contrary, she teased Snotlout in response, assured Hiccup that everything was fine in the team. And even when it became clear that she and Hiccup were stupid, Astrid still said, "but we're back. And that's the main thing." I don't know about you, but it seemed suspicious to me. Astrid has always been obsessed with discipline and was most worried about the ability of riders to fight back against enemies! Remember how she fought with Ruffnut because the twins are not serious about their mission! And, according to Fishlegs, Astrid missed the party in her honor because she was strengthening Berk's protective perimeter! Remembering all this, I decided to figure out why Hofferson was so relaxed. And ... to be honest, the results of my research were very unexpected.
The whole team rests on the shoulders of Hiccup and Astrid. They are the leaders, they are obliged to watch the Edge, take care of the dragons, train the riders, make sure that these riders didn't do anything dangerous. And now, to all this has been added the strengthening of defense, battles with hunters and vigilant surveillance of the volcano. That's a lot. Hiccup and Astrid simply did not take out the load that suddenly fell on their shoulders. They no longer want to think about anything, care about anything – they both need a break.
Astrid was definitely more tired than Hiccup. Back in the first episode of the season, Astrid expressed a desire to leave the Edge and return to Berk to a quiet life.
Of course, duty and anxiety for the dragons did not allow her to leave, but still – in the series "Angle matters" Hofferson dropped this phrase:
"You know that I have enough thoughts for a week ahead. I'm going to sleep"
She says in plain text that she was incredibly exhausted by this war. She wants to relax and unwind – a simple desire of a simple person.
When Astrid ponders why hunters need an ice-tailed pike, she looks so exhausted and gloomy that Hiccup even asks if everything is fine with her. Astrid is trying very hard to get back in line and become a good assistant for Hiccup again, but she just can't do it.
That's why Astrid lost to Hiccup in a sword fight–she was just very tired. Therefore, she is less concerned about the problem of moving away from the team than Hiccup.
I think it happened because Hiccup has become too dependent on Astrid. In all his actions and decisions, he relies on her, and thus unwittingly puts too much on her. Perhaps this was one of the reasons why Astrid was so tired. In order for their relationship to function normally further, Hiccup will have to learn how to be a full-fledged leader and achieve success himself. This will help him get rid of self–doubt, and Astrid will relax and feel like a girl next to him. (and, it seems to me, this conflict was resolved in the series "Family Matters" and "Mi Amore Wing").
Damn... Guys, I love Dreamworks so much for making this pair so thoughtful! It turned out that she has a whole bunch of nuances that we simply do not notice. And it's so cool! I need look again the rest of the season's episodes to understand how they got out of this situation.
Random-ass RTTE headcanon:
Hiccup and Astrid would sext each other using terror mails between their huts at night.
Bonus points if one of the other riders just happens to notice a wore the fuck out terrible terror flying back and forth faster and faster from one hut to another.
Talking about Hiccstrid. <333
Sandbusted
Let’s start off with my first LOL Moment: Hiccup’s fucking leg just *pops* off and Hookfang belatedly digs in the sand.
Ooooh my god, the leg. The fucking leg. Freaking... Snotlout and Hiccup interacting, once again, is the best Hiccup-involved anything this show has to offer.
Snotlout’s probably one of the best things this show’s done right
And his relationship with Hiccup is one of the best so far
I also greatly enjoyed the Fishtrid bromance. I always love other friendships. That’s one such boon of the TV show.
Leave it to Hiccup to make Astrid feel “useless”. So, this is what I like about the ‘show’s’ version (you know, the one that ignores canon). They do get some things right, and one such thing is Astrid getting to point out that Hiccup has everything. He got it all at the end of the first movie (working out the kinks after getting it all, is what I would have liked to have seen in a bridge).
Here’s the thing: I wouldn’t have reflexatory cringing if the show didn’t TRY to claim the TV series as following “canon”. Because it’s not. They did their own thing--at first just fumbling along, sorta mistargeting their audience, and then later attempting a patch-job between movies, and that’s great... if only they had nutted up and admitted as much instead of trying to lay claim to something anyone over the age of 8 could question. In that case, the fandom would have been spared a lot of strife, and the show itself probably quite a few less naysayers.
I mean, it was downright offensive to many fans. And I’m only laying this down to preface why I find all the “oooo Hiccstrid uwu” lackluster. It’s not my Hiccstrid, with all its flaws and subtle depth.
The TV show itself has just hollowed out their version of Hiccstrid. The character interactions are shallow, and funny, and the writers seem to be having a lot of fun with it (there are some clever angles to that camera ;)). That’s great! However, theres no deep, rich storytelling here, particularly between Hiccup and Astrid. Even the movies, which had flubbed the couple’s get-together, had more nuanced substance in their relationship.
So, yeah, we’ll assume all the interactions in between S4 and S5 have led to a betrothal. Hiccup and Astrid are “just friends” with an inexplicable attraction to each other when, at 17/18 (?) they’ve decided the hormones were too much so they’ve gotten together and... in a couple week’s time of suffering a volcano they’ve made arrangement for marriage. Maybe that’s how its done on Berk? We don’t know. And apparently they’re going to stay ‘betrothed’ for the next couple years... pfff
I don’t mind the pair’s interactions at all. They’re cute. But the fact remains that Hiccup, in his “proposal” whatsit, dropped the phrase “you’ve always been a part of our family”. That’s canon erasure right there. And right after some cuteness of pointing out how much Stoick adores Astrid (and Stoick would totally help/hand-anything-down for getting Astrid into his family). Like, I said, it’s that dark cloud hanging over it of the show trying to claim any of this as “canon”. That one offense seems to be constantly shadowing anything remotely cute or canon-like, reminding me to compare it to canon. It will always fall short. They did this to themselves :/
On another note... I’m loving the increase of violence. But also, TF.
tbh i think fishlegs knew what was up when he interrupted hiccstrid at the stairs to the great hall
i mean just look at his reaction, he genuinly didn’t expect that
and when hiccup and astrid quickly parted he understood that they didn’t want anyone to know (yet) so he pretended to think they were doing something entirely else
and then the suggestive “carry on, you two”
conclusion: fishlegs knew but being a good friend he gave his friends their space
WELL IT'S ABOUT GODDAMN TIME ONLY TOOK THEM 3.75 SEASONS
