A bunch of doodles I’ve done in the past few months. The 4th image is the newest and is supposed to ruby from ruby quest but I couldn’t get her shapes right.
I usually just doodle whenever I’m bored but Ive been wanting to get better at art recently and im unsure on what to start with and exactly. I heard drawing shapes can help tho im afraid I’ll draw a bunch of squares and circles without knowing how to improve from it if that makes sense. I’ll still do that tho of course and maybe I’ll ask other sites for art advice too!!
Ruby Quest references in Deltarune
Deltarune contains two references to the classic /tg/ quest (an 'interactive webcomic' in the same format as, say, MS Paint Adventures) Ruby Quest. If you weren't around on the Internet at the time when Ruby Quest was considered really cool, these might seem tenuous, but I am 100% certain that Toby Fox was very aware of Ruby Quest considering the other selections of references in his work (Cave Story, .flow fandom memes ("potassium"), and of course his own previous work in the MOTHER community and on Homestuck itself).
The Swatchlings are likely modeled off of Ace, a masked bird person in a servant role who accosts the protagonists throughout the facility they are trapped in.
The "water cooler" boss is, like "potassium", a reference to a specific fandom meme in which Ruby Quest players acted as though a water cooler in one particular room was a sentient "character".
Both of these stuck out to me as obvious when I played the game, but I can't find a single person pointing these out anywhere on the Internet. You will just have to take my word for it that back in the day, if you knew about Yume Nikki, Toby's own Halloween Hack, etc. you probably knew about Ruby Quest.
my buddy put me onto ruby quest the other day
i've been on a trip back down memory lane re: ruby quest and nan quest and discovered while browsing a recent fansite that apparently the ruby shimeji was considered lost media? i was obsessed with ruby quest in 2011 so was fairly certain i had it and turns out i was right LOL. so i'm sharing it here for those who might want it.
here's the original, straight from my old files
as far i can tell it doesn't work anymore (at least not on win10) it's also untranslated and the japanese text is all garbled for me, probably from not having my system locale set to japanese (i remember the olden days when you had to do this for .flow...) but i'm including it for archiving purposes and because that way if someone knows how to make it work, they can do so with the original files.
i also made a version where i downloaded the latest shimejiee and replaced all the images. this one will spawn the character and she'll move around, multiply, etc. they also go on minimized windows once you've whitelisted them. so this is basically a "working" version.
available here
let me know if the dl links don't work!
& here's a screenshot showing rubyee working for good measure
My, my, been awhile since I've written this theme again, huh? About a good 11 years-ish I'd say, since I last tried remastering this track. To be honest, I've tried so many times to go back and redo this piece, but fear always got the best of me. But you know, I've still gotten comments about how much people still loved the music from that album, and have continued to follow me into the present with my ever changing musical ideas. So, what better way to celebrate Halloween than conquering that fear and returning to the dark, nightmarish halls of The Metal Glen?
Happy Halloween everyone. Thanks for sticking with me all these years!
ruby quest stuff (featuring nan in like, one of them)
