Magick is always the tactic of last resort for those who refuse to give up hope. You do not summon Cthulhu to help you find the TV remote, you only visit the witch at edge of the village, when all other options have been explored. For she is the "lone shark" of the Gods.
- Gordon White, The Chaos Protocols
Great podcast with two great Canucky witches.
Gordon White’s Star.Ships is an ambitious journey with the astrolabe of the stellar tradition as a device to guide us to the origins of human spirituality. Yet it's not an etiology of magic or an ontology of the spirits. What Gordon attempts to do here is the restoration of context of the magician's craft and of the magician him/herself. Early on in the book it becomes obvious magic and spirits have always been with us. They didn't show up, but the stories we tell about them did. And they differ greatly the further we move to the present. It is a rather profound experience to see familiar tales be traced back by Gordon to extremely early origins. You can feel a profoundly emotional connection and resonance, knowing the tales told around the first fires aren't really forgotten yet. Magicians are well aware how the Keys of Solomon are able to unlock the hidden chambers of the mind; Gordon uses them to further unlock more hidden chambers of sites like Giza or lock pick the coded symbolism of Gobekli Tepe. What the book does, is not docking the ship of Western esotericism in late antiquity's Alexandria, but dragging it overland, through early antiquity's Near Eastern deserts, unto the Indian Ocean and onwards to something Enochian in the Pacific. Gordon doesn't claim to have the last word on antediluvian matters, but what he manages to do is give an overarching view of where we're at, historiographically, and which dots we can (possibly) connect thus far in order to get a better grasp on and amplify our practise.
I think where a lot of people fail in getting their heads around geopolitics is their sheer lack of imagination, the lazy belief that the comings and goings of an entire planet can be summed up in a ninety second Sky News soundbite and completely understood by a moron.

Ask yourself this. Ask yourself whether the skills associated with growing your own food will become more useful or less useful between now and 2030. Would you rather get good at this while it is fun to learn, or when you're in a knife fight with a local gang while fishing expired crab meat from a dumpster to feed your child? None of us know what is going to happen between now and 2030 but you are on some fine intoxicants if you think it is going to be smooth sailing.

I still like a good conspiracy theory, of course. Particularly the batshit ones like flat earth or interdimensional spider people from Saturn controlling the governments of the world. They are very useful for keeping the reality tunnel muscles limber. (I call it conspiracy yoga.) Plus they are endlessly fascinating cultural objects in and of themselves. They are what happens in cultures that stop telling ghost stories by the campfire or sending their children off to ‘religious education’ –which typically amounts to the same thing. But there comes a point, not just in one's life but also in the timeline, where conspiracy or para-political yoga yields diminishing returns. Get in, get your map and get out. We all know what happens when we stare into the abyss for too long. That is the secret of reality tunnel calisthenics. Obsess over a dark world, live in a dark world. (A functional definition of social media if ever there was one.)
