I ran my 1st marathon this weekend. I needed time to reflect before sharing my experience. This wasn't intended to be my 1st marathon. I signed up 9 days before the race. Only a few friends knew. I was scared, probably crazy, but wanted to push myself. I knew I wasn't fully trained, but I wanted to run. I needed to feel the pain and joy that comes from going farther than I'd ever gone before, physically and mentally. My friends were running the half marathon. They started 13.1 miles away from me. I started this race alone. I finished this race with the love and support of 2 women I am lucky to call my best friends, one of their incredibly supportive spouses, as well as dear friends whom provided advice, checked on me, and helped me after the race. The look you see on my face in these photos are quite possibly hysterical tears of joy. I was overcome with emotion upon seeing my friends near the finish. They were there as I made one of my dreams come true. I had a bucket list goal to complete a marathon before turning 50. I accomplished my dream just over 1 year from my self-imposed deadline. I may have physically run the race, but I couldn't have done it without my friends. I owe them all my love and gratitude. Another friend recently told me, "we are all like family in running". He couldn't have been more correct. We truly, truly are. I'm happy I took that first step. I look forward to the next 26.2 mile journey.
