FEATURED VENDOR’S PRODUCT: HANDMADE OGHAM SETS
The hand-crafted Ogham Sets by Dragon Oak (shown in image #2 above) were included inside our Celtic Tree Magick Sabbat Boxes. In order to unlock the spiritual mysteries surrounding the Celts, one must have a good grasp and understanding of the Ogham (pronounced “Oh-Em”). Though these handmade staves were included in each box to be used as a form of divination (meant to further enrich and deepen your spiritual practice), the Ogham is so much more than just a system for divination. It is an ancient creed, an alphabet, a form of communication and a unique system of folk lore and magick representative of trees and nature that was devised by the Celts roughly 1700-2000 years ago. Each Ogham staff set comes with the original 20 Oghams used by the Celts along with a reference guide on how to use them for divination purposes and is presented in a green silken bag. The Celts, for whom the celebration of Imbolc stems from, believed that the “Brigid’s Cross” (a symbol sacred to the goddess Brigid) is a powerful talisman of protection, and would be hung above windows or entryways into the home in effort to keep harm or want away. It is originally believed that Brigid’s crosses were crafted by the Celts and hung indoors as a way to invite their life giving Goddess (Brigid) into the home during the start of spring and the planting season. It was quite the symbolic gesture during our ancestor’s time, holding various significance. In Celtic lore, Brigid was considered the “fire keeper of the flame of life” and some believe that the reeds and rushes used to make these talismans happen to represent the kindling used to keep “the life fire” lit, making this an extremely old and powerful form of sympathetic magick. The practice of crafting these ancient talismans still continues today in parts of Ireland on St. Brigid’s Day, which is celebrated on February 1st. The Brigid’s Cross shown in the image above was included in this year’s Imbolc Sabbat Box. Each of these Brigid’s Crosses were individually hand crafted in Ireland and made with real reeds and rushes harvested from the River Shannon, by folk artist Patricia O’Flaherty. Patricia, the founder of “Naomh Padraig Handicrafts,” (pronounced NAV BODRIG) has been an Irish folk artist for over twenty years and uses age-old techniques and material to craft her line of traditional Irish Folk Crafts. These sets are available in limited quantity at the Sabbat Box Store. Each Brigid’s Cross set comes with an information card on Brigid, the significance of the Brigid’s Cross, as well as a matching organza bag. 🕯There is a very old tradition surrounding bayberries and the winter season ❄️ that stems back to the first American settlers. When they first arrived here, everything revolved around survival. During the winters, the most important goods were in short supply, including candles. At this time, candles were usually made from tallow (animal fat) which had an unpleasant odor when burned, didn’t particularly burn well, and could become rancid. Since many animals were slaughtered and put up for the winter, there was generally a tallow shortage at this time of year (winter). Colonists soon discovered that the abundant bayberry bushes 🌿 of the Northeast were a source of a waxy substance that could be boiled down, producing a cleaner, better burning material for candle-making. Unfortunately, it takes fifteen pounds of berries to make one pound of wax, which made them very labor-intensive and expensive. Because how labor intensive it was to make them, and because of their cost $, it was considered a sign of good luck and prosperity to be able to have bayberry candles, especially around this time of the year. The luxury of owning and gifting bayberry candles quickly became a tradition...and that tradition is to burn bayberry candles around this time of year (especially during the solstice and into the New Year) as a way to usher in prosperity and happiness for the new year. The old saying goes: “For a bayberry candle burned to the socket brings joy to the heart and gold to the pocket.” USES: 🕯Prosperity Magick 🕯Money Magick 🕯Money Spells 🕯Success Magick 🕯Positive Manifestation Magick 〰Size: 1.5x 2.0 inch standard votive spell candle. Comes boxed with bayberry lore and history.
