On my Wheel Of The Year, it’s Autumnal (”into autumn”) in place of Lughnasadh, and this year, I tackled and completed a long-overddue digging and replanting of the saffron.

It took two hours to dig up the entire bed.  There were fewer corms than when I last dug them up, and many voids near corms as I dug them.  I can hypothesize a variety of reasons, most of which can be mitigated by tending them more frequently.  The record rain we had this spring probably contributed to some of them rotting away.

I started at dawn, got all the way to partial replanting before the sun got to me, and then finished at sunset.  93 of the largest and healthiest corms were replanted.  About 25 gallons of Zoo Doo from Woodland Park Zoo was added to the bed.
