Meet Susan! 🐣 Susan is still a baby and arrived at @blackberrycreek a couple of weeks ago after her owners surrendered her due to her blindness. She was getting picked on by her flock mates and needed a safe place to grow up. After having her for only a day, we quickly realized that Susan is not blind at all! She simply had a bad eye infection that was left untreated, and one of her eyes was completely swollen shut. After antibiotic ointment and some alone time in our special needs aviary, Susan is doing great and will soon be ready to join our regular flock. Because she is young and still peeping like a baby, she needs a few more weeks of growth before we integrate her with the adults, but we are excited for her to have a brand new flock of friends and a very happy life ahead of her at the sanctuary! Meet Poppy, a beautiful Pekin duck who was abandoned in a pond in the foothills and nearly died. She is facing severe malnutrition and dehydration, external wounds, and neurological damage from either a head injury or toxin. We just took her into our care this morning and are down at @medicalcenterforbirds for emergency hospitalization. They will be providing IV fluids and nutrition, lab work, blood testing for lead poisoning and infection, doing x-rays, and attempting to save her life. If and when she is able to come home to Blackberry Creek, her new friend, our disabled duck Puddles, will be waiting to welcome her with open wings. Did you know pigs are the fifth smartest animal on Earth and can easily learn things like their names and how to sit even as tiny babies?! Notice Crommy’s model “sit.” It is because of your generosity that pigs like Cromwell, who were destined for slaughter, have safe permanent homes here at Blackberry Creek. Cromwell’s pregnant mother literally jumped off the slaughter truck onto the freeway to save him and his siblings. Because of his large size and some genetic factors, Cromwell and his brothers need intensive lifelong hoof care. Three to four times a year they are sedated by our veterinarian, the cracks in their hooves dremeled out, and any infection treated. They also receive pain medication post-procedure. To help this process be safer and easier, we are building a veterinary chute and medical stall to aid in lower stress treatment for them and a safe, cozy, isolated place to recover. When MacFarland was a baby he was dehorned/disbudded, an incredibly painful practice where the nerve rich horns are removed or the buds burned so as not to continue to develop. This is done by farmers for safety or economic reasons though the animal cannot give consent and is not given pain medication. Mac’s left horn grew back in completely deformed and brittle, and last week he broke it off when he hit it on a fence (swipe right for the aftermath). After bleeding an alarming amount, it finally stopped with the application of cornstarch. Just one of the many ways animals are exploited by humans.
