On the last lap of a globe-encircling trip, part of a group of European displaced persons leave a sealed train after arriving in Staten Island, May 28, 1950, under the sponsorship of the International Refugee Organization. All were evacuees from China, and most sailed on May 29, 1950 aboard the transport General Ballou for Bremerhaven, Germany. Other were accepted for immigration in the United States. A total of 107 were scheduled for repatriation to their home countries—Germany, Austria, and Italy. The train arrived from San Francisco.
