Safe Haven [noun] /ˌseɪf ˈheɪ.vən/ - a place where you are protected from harm or danger
The unadulterated pride and affection in this look... no wonder both his friends knew exactly what was going on. This look? This is love.
DETAILS.
Kanghan came home with Sailom greasy, hungover, sweaty, with his knuckles bruised , wearing clothes he bought on the sidewalk and a white shells necklace instead of his white gold. And you know, giddy because yes they were in trouble, but they had fun. Together.
I love this scene because his rich male friends are wearing the same expensive necklaces he normally does.
But not today because he is matching Sailom and not them
And he stays by his side in frame until Kang’s father’s presence isolates him from everyone else in the room.
But Kang has backup now.
It's the way Kanghan's true colors come to the surface when he's suddenly faced with the real world consequences of being poor, how every thought of petty revenge vanishes as soon as he's put in the position of either helping Sailom or not. And how all of Sailom's bravado vanishes when Kanghan protects him, clutching to a familiar evil protecting him from true harm. They're both just so very, very young, playing at violence and enmity, now faced with reality together. They both lost a little innocence in that scene, and I think Kanghan, at least, needed that.
There it is. The reminder, the crushing weight of poverty coming back to obliterate everything in Sailom’s life. And it all starts with his brother’s innocent smile and less than above board plans for Grandma Ging and her family.
Sailom was so close to forgetting the worst of it, of being able to enjoy just being a teenage boy for a change. He can’t even fault his brother really, because Saifah has always done everything he can to get them out of the position that they’re in. Saifah lacks scruples because the world has never cared about him, has never helped him the way it seems to be helping Sailom. So he’ll lie, cheat and steal his way into getting the money he needs to keep his head above water. Including destroying Sailom’s chances of a happy teenage romance with Kang.
Sailom knows it too, even if he’s going to hope against hope that his brother doesn’t do anything too drastic.
Sailom loves his brother, but he also knows his brother. He can see the disaster coming a mile away which was precisely why he refused to introduce Saifah in the first place.
It’s the beginning of the end of Sailom’s fantasy world and while I absolutely believe Sailom will do what he can to prevent it. There is nothing that can stop it.
I know that he's overwhelmed with happiness and pride and his boyfriend in his jersey, but Kang is having Impure Thoughts here.
That he's so unable to believe that he's accomplished his goal, that he has someone who loves him, that he's done this thing and proven himself, is so heartbreaking (and makes what his dad did so much worse)
And that he used that line, that line that Sailom threw at him when he was mad? 😭😭😭
But Sailom knows what to do. He knows what Kang needs, and it has the benefit of being what Sailom really feels.
His boyfriend is the bestest, most special boy.
And Kang's little smile? Baaabeyyy!
Look how happy they are!
