13. Unpopular opinion about XXX character?

I think "JGY isn't an evil mastermind who can just be tossed in as a two-dimensional villain if you want to remotely reflect the actual story" technically counts as an unpopular opinion, judging by the fic I see??

I think my JGY fan unpopular opinion is that the "JGY must get loved into submission against his will/despite his obvious and clearly stated discomfort" trope as the go-to for his relationship dynamics is... a bit meh for me. I'm absolutely down for arcs that explore a character moving past their barriers and finding comfort in emotional intimacy, but 1) lack of emotional intimacy isn't JGY's problem (he tells LXC most of his problems, he just not unreasonably assesses that maybe patricide would be a bridge too far for retaining LXC's respect and trust) and 2) the consistency of its portrayal in fic/meta-- and again, this is about an accumulation of patterns, not any individual version of it-- is just really troubling considering this a character for whom respect, boundaries, and control are so important for very, very good narrative reasons.

14. Unpopular opinion about your fandom?

It's not really that hard to just avoid the larger currents of fandom drama and cozy up in a lovely corner with nice people with good opinions

The juniors as a collective. Every combination of the four of them is wholesome and good.

1. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get? Winterspider. I can see Peter hero-crushing over Bucky, and Bucky being sort of bemused and flattered, but Peter is a teenager and adult Bucky would never. Aside from the fact they have almost nothing in common experience-wise (and Bucky has supertanker-sized buckets of trauma) Bucky wants a man, not a kid who can't even buy a beer. (TBH, shipping Peter with any adult freaks me the fuck out, sorry. I get why people do it, but it squicks me hardcore.)

4. Do you have a NoTP in your fandom? Are they a popular OTP? I really don't like reading Winterwidow. I know Bucky and Nat are a canon love affair in the comics (which I don't read), but if I'm gonna imagine any woman in Bucky Barnes' bed, it's gonna be me.

7. Is there anything you used to like but can’t stand now? When I first jumped in less than a year ago, I was enjoying a fic that DID-style separated the Winter Soldier and Bucky, and heavily woobied TWS persona. Now I'll whump the ever-living fuck out of the Soldier and adore him traumatized to the point of barely functioning, but I don't like reading him infantilized or having other characters woobie him. And I think having a dissociated identity Bucky has to be done with careful nuance now that I'm a *cough* discerning reader. *nose in the air, lol*

9. Most disliked character(s)? Why? It's a toss-up between Tony Stark and Peggy Carter. I've explained my Tony hatred elsewhere. Peggy employed and worked beside Armin Zola knowing that he experimented on and tortured Bucky. You can't tell me that a smart, driven woman at the head of her own spy ring didn't have some inkling that the Winter Soldier project was going on and couldn't put two-and-two together.

10. Most disliked arc? Why? FUCK. YOU. ENDGAME-STEVEN. No explanation needed. 11. Is there an unpopular character you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why? I'm with the rest of the trash squad in celebrating the Karpov renaissance! I don't think he's popular outside of our little circle and it's a shame. His bond with the Winter Soldier makes him a great character to explore. He kept the code book, which indicates deliberate sabotage of the American team when they came to claim his weapon after the fall of the USSR. Or maybe he just wanted to keep the only piece of the Soldier he could lay claim to. 12. Is there an unpopular arc that you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why? I mean, if you count "the fandom" as the wider group beyond HTP, than probably all the trash I adore would fit here. 17. Instead of XYZ happening, I would have made ABC happen… Oooooooh, boy. Um. I would rewrite Bucky's storyline in TFATWS. I would make his therapist explicitly a HYDRA sleeper agent employed by T. Ross to keep Bucky guilt-ridden and isolated so that he feels compelled to become the gov't's asset. John Walker would be groomed to be Bucky's new handler (blond, blue-eyed, Captain America). The fight against the Flagsmashers would start as a simple investigation into the super-serum that evolves into a world-spanning plot to destabilize countries just starting to get back on their feet after the second Snap, with the HYDRA-owned GRC poised to swoop in and seize full power. Bucky would be manipulated by judicious exposure of his trash past into serving HYDRA again only to be revealed in the climax as having manipulated them so that he could get close enough to the bad guy leaders to take them down. There'd be a truly vicious fight that calls upon every ounce of his deadly skill and capabilities so that he finally sees that while he may still be a weapon, he can aim himself now and fight for a cause he believes in. And then Steve would come back from the moon and they'd fuck onscreen. 19. What is the one thing you hate most about your fandom? Antis and purity police. Just let me enjoy my trash porn in peace, asshats. I guess the second thing would be the actual MCU writers, who managed to take vibrant characters and a strong narrative arc and no homo them into utter ruin and ooc behavior.

ummmm something that I don't like is all of the arguing that people do about elves origins in the writing. I like to think that the Dalish probably have a variety of different backgrounds and cultures since they live in different clans separated from one another most of the time. I have seen a lot of arguing about elves are jewish, elves are romani, elves and indigenous, etc and I guess some salt in that is the way that people get so hung up on trying to apply the real world into a fantasy setting. Sure art imitates life but sometimes I feel that people can take it a little too far when they are trying to tell others how to write their own characters.

Another thing on that topic that bugs me is when people throw social issues that exist in real life into thedas where they don't really exist. I mentioned it sort of when I mentioned the whole racism is what you are more than how you look. While there is some stuff like sexism, homophobia, etc in thedas it doesn't really happen in the way that I often see people trying to force, which is what i tend to feel is heavily based on American history. Tumblr as a whole feels very American centric in terms of politics and stuff, however rp should be a fun hobby to express yourself and do something you like. I do write as a form of self care so sometimes i write about darker themes, but I don't like when others try to force things on others or become aggressive about whether they are or are not real life social issues in thedas. Sometimes we gotta separate fact from fiction.

So, like, unpopular opinion about all of them? man, I feel like I...do not have a very good sense of what popular/unpopular opinions are in this segment of fandom, and honestly feel like most of mine are pretty in line with at least some segments with the exception of, like, one thing I can think of (which is the fact that I Do Not Vibe With Songxiao as a pairing and honestly vibe less with it the more time I spend in this fandom, I am sorry! No hard feelings! 

Outside of that...I don’t really know! This is a disappointing answer I feel like. Maybe the fact that I don’t actually feel like the Song Lan/Xiao Xingchen ~romance~ ever went anywhere? I think there was a very intense relationship and some pining but like, not more than that. Which is how I like it, I think, as one of those missed connection/never happened things more than “doomed romance” things. 

I feel like...hm. I definitely have friends who get tetchy about a-Qing’s pretending to be blind and it doesn’t actually bother me, personally (though I do tend to headcanon her as low vision anyway because that’s just fun). In general I am a little...I wouldn’t say super picky about my Xiao Xingchen characterization but I am somewhat picky in ways that periodically conflict with fandom characterization, but I couldn’t actually articulate what those are. Just that, you know, I know it when I see it.

I do not find “Xiao Xingchen can’t do math” jokes funny because I am a joyless being with no sense of humor.

Also - I’m not sure how unpopular it is, again, but I will more or less die on the hill that Xue Yang’s feelings about Xiao Xingchen were genuine and not solely an artifact of obsession, though obviously the obsessive elements were there. 

Oh!! I get twitchy around how much the word “sociopath” and “psychopath” get thrown around re: Xue Yang (and in this fandom in general!) because I have only gotten twitchier about that kind of language over the years and this fandom really does love to throw it around.
