what did your analysis of the boom lyrics result in i’m curious
okay so i said analysis what i actually meant was i checked a lyric video, saw that it was wrong in many places, proceeded to check the lyrics in the mv and then checked the real korean lyrics and it took me all of this to understand everything they were saying lmao BUT i’m going to elaborate just for you (and because i’m bored and i like talking way too much):
disclaimer: i’m not fluent in korean, i’ve just been studying it for a few years and i’ve gone as far as being put in advanced classes but that’s all lmao
so once you understand them, the lyrics to “boom” are actually quite straight-forward. there’s about 3 main themes that could be drawn from them, the first one being achieving your dreams, the second one growing up, and the third one just an overall sense of self-confidence (as in, i’m the best, basically), all set in an underlying context of their job as performers and idols, as already established in the very first lyric (숨소리조차도 음악 같은 stage “even my breath is like music on stage”). what’s also easy to notice is the fact that both the first and second themes are always talked about in a past tense. if we focus on the theme of dreams first, this means that they have already achieved their dreams, they’re not working hard to get to them (as could be expected from a song coming from rookies/young idols), but they’re already living them. interestingly, the focus is then shifted from them themselves as idols and their dreams, to the audience to which they sing this song (the fans), resulting in the following line in the pre-chorus: 난 너의 꿈이자 꿈에 닿는 통로가 돼 / 너의 꿈을 손에 쥐여줄 수 있어: “I become your dreams and a path to it (Path to it) / I can put your dream in your hands” (although I’d prefer to translate it as something like “i become your dreams and the path to achieve them / I can make you hold your dream in your hands”). now that the dreamies themselves have achieved their dream, they’re helping the fans through their music to get there as well (the form 쥐여주다 indicates the act of helping the person addressed). the song also uses various “running” metaphors, oftentimes associated with the beating of the heart, in order to indicate this call to the audience to “run” with nct dream towards the fulfillment of their own dreams and goals. as for the second theme of growing up, there’s one line in the pre-chorus that makes particular reference to it: 순수한 표정으로 / 춤을 추던 아인 이제 웃으면서 / 이 트랙에 불을 질러: “The dancing child with an innocent face / Now smiles and sets this track on fire”. This particular line is repeated and slightly modified throughout the song: (…) Now smiles and burns inside your heart, and later, sung by chenle, The singing child with an innocent voice / Now smiles and attracts you (or leads you) into this track. this is an obvious reference to their earlier music, and to how much they have matured both as people and as performers since debut. this explains as well the change of style that nct dream’s music has undergone with this new album. lastly, the third theme of self-confidence is the most straight-forward one, especially present in jeno and jaemin’s rap parts, but overall present throughout the song, so i won’t be commenting on it because this is already ridiculously long.
lastly, i wanted to raise the question as to what the chorus: “we got that boom boom boom boom boom” actually means. as seen in SEVENTEEN’s 2016 eponymous song, the onomatopoeia “boom boom” is often used to mimic the beating of a heart, which is in itself a sound related to a person’s nervous reaction when faced with the object of their affection. in nct dream’s “boom”, however, this common love metaphor doesn’t seem to exactly fit the overall meaning of the song, which leads me to believe that it may actually be referring to the audience’s excited reaction to their music. they’ve “got that boom boom” because of the emotive effect they are able to provoke on those who listen to them.
