never meet your heroes' floating heads
It's good to remind myself of what game I'm running every now and then.
I LOVE HITTING MONSTERS WITH MY FORD F 150
I've always thought that Freenet / Hyphanet would be such fertile ground to do an amazing ARG or Analog Horror series in an actually unique way that feels like you're authentically interacting with the source material. Then I go back on it and I realize that any work of fiction on that network would be virtually indistinguishable from the vast ocean of authentic eerie, disconcerting webpages out there.
The Site-245 Masquerade Ball is going swimmingly. Shimmering fabrics, chandeliers, and crystals adorn the cafeteria. Researchers of all walks of life mill about, waltzing to the music playing over the speakers or hanging out near the punch bowl, all dressed in fashionable costumes and disguised with ornate masks.
Jack sits on the side, having pulled his shimmering red mask aside to sip a cup of punch. A mysterious figure wearing tattered yellow robes and a pallid mask sits next to him, watching the researchers pass by.
“Punch?” Jack offers, filling a cup and offering it to the stranger. He accepts silently with hands gloved in black silk, simply holding it and staring into its depths.
“Not one to talk, huh?” Jack says, trying to start a conversation. “Are you from around here?”
“I am but a visitor from the kingdom Hastur,” the stranger says, his voice rich and mysterious, sounding like he’s choosing his words carefully. “And you?”
“I grew up in Nebraska myself,” Jack says. “Can’t say I’ve heard of Hastur, but it sounds nice.”
He takes a sip of punch; the stranger mirrors his movements, raising the cup to his polished porcelain lips.
“You’d have to take your mask off to drink that,” Jack says.
“I wear no mask,” the stranger replies.
“Ah, makes sense,” Jack says. “Sorry for assuming. Have you ever watched Star Trek?”
