Yoga🧘🏽♀️ is a packed word, and has existed dating from 1000 BCE to the 19th century. Yogas practices and philosophy is said to come from ancient India. Yoga was a bunch of various ideas, beliefs and techniques that often conflicted and contradicted each other until Patanjali created the Yoga-Sutras. This was the first systemic presentation of yoga however it is said that Patanjali was not one single person but a group of teachings. As sages did not want to take credit for generational knowledge thus the anonymity of Patanjali. Yoga is rich with many texts📚including the Yoga Sutras (spiritual handbook), Rig Vedas (collections of songs, mantras & rituals), Upanishads (refined by mystic seers who documented their practices & beliefs), Bhagavad-Gita (ancient poems), and many more. No matter what style or type of yoga you practice, as Americans influenced by yoga we must recognize and uplift its roots. India is the birthplace of this beautiful practice that continues to aid us in living a different way of life. As our culture is now inundated🧿📿🕉 with Indian relics, deities, practices, rituals, style, lifestyle etc. our gratitude and appreciation should match. What a gift🎁 as we all can practice some form of yoga and not feel like there are restrictions or limitations to what that may be for us individually. With this freedom of practice & what I have gained and continue to gain form this gift we call yoga & how much India has provided to me in so many ways.
