Okay, so I have an interesting hypothesis about Crocodylomorphs (fellow SSOT [Science Side of Tumblr] give me a hand, please), the background for which, I’ll outline in bullets.
Modern Crocodilians are lazy goobers that can live for months without food, due to said lazy goober-ity
Embryological studies suggest that modern Crocodilians once had a 4-chambered heart, but lost it at some point for a 3-chambered heart
Many ancient Crocodylomorphs were highly cursorial and active and grew very quickly, suggesting a very high metabolism.
So, my hypothesis is this: before the K-T Event, the majority of Crocodylomorphs were very active, to the point of being warm-blooded homeothermic endotherms, with 4-chambered hearts and active lifestyles. There also existed the lazy “throwback” goober Crocodilians. When the K-T Event put a smackdown on Earth’s ecosystems, the lazy goober Crocodilians found themselves at an energetic advantage, being able to survive severe famine, and are now the dominant Crocodylomorphs.
