Charles couldn’t lie. The corner office really was nice.

There was nothing wrong with the old space, but this was a clear upgrade befitting of a senior partner. The wall of floor-to-ceiling windows looked out high above the cityscape almost like a bird but better. A sofa and coffee table imbued an inviting and luxurious aura to the otherwise intimidating atmosphere. Stacks of books that had once lined the back wall of a room had finally found a home on a wide bookshelf along with a few picture frames displaying old and new memories.

There were plants.

Charles scrunched his nose at the miniature F2004, the only knickknack that sat on the tidy desk. He picked it up in its case and inspected the model as if it could have changed since he last saw it.

It hadn’t.

Everything else had.

Briefly, Charles wondered how long it would take until he made senior partner and got an office like this. As it stood, the unofficial assurance from Mattia about his potential promotion was already beyond his belief. And what more, the promise came with a confusing amount of guilt and hesitation, which led him to his current location.

“How did you get here?”

Startled, Charles whipped around to face the man addressing him—the man whose office he currently stood in—with the model car clutched tightly in his grasp.

“I found the address,” he said. “I even used this app. I think you have heard of it. Maps.”

In the doorway, Sebastian stood and just looked at him. Charles had never felt more self-conscious than when the man did nothing but stare as if he could see his heart’s truest desires, as if he could just look at Charles and know.

“I mean, how did you get past Britta?”

Charles scoffed, affronted. “Britta and I are friends!”

Sebastian raised an eyebrow at him. And for something Charles had found so annoying before as if the man was always questioning and judging him, he now took an unreasonable amount of comfort seeing that expression pointed at him once again. He could spend an entire afternoon plotting ways to receive such attention from Sebastian if it meant bridging the sudden disconnect between them.

“Is that so?” Sebastian said as he took the F2004 in his hands and placed it back down on the desk.

He could see his fingerprints on the glass case.

“No— I mean… we are—” Charles huffed, acquiesced. “I might be paying for lunch.”

His credit card had come out in record time during his conversation with Sebastian’s longtime legal secretary, and Charles had smiled so genuinely from the familiarity of the interaction—a lopsided one he was clearly not in control of—that his cheeks had hurt.

All his colleagues at Binotto Mekies treated him like a hot shot that they had to please and suck up to. It was nice. But here, as likely an unwanted guest, his former coworkers regarded him like a pesky interloper that they just couldn’t seem to get rid of.

He loved it.

“So…” Sebastian said as he sat on the edge of his desk and waited for Charles to take the initiative.

So.

Why hadn’t Sebastian called back? Why hadn’t he said anything before he left? What did he see in Stroll that suddenly made him a fountain of free advice? Why wasn’t he at his usual lunch spot on Thursdays anymore? Why did Charles get the feeling that the man was hiding something from him? Why did he feel so unsettled at the firm now?

“Your old office is still empty,” Charles said instead.

“That’s what you came here to tell me?”

He shrugged. “I closed the Pirelli case. They settled.”

The older man nodded. “Good.”

No, it was not good. It had taken ages, and he had lost count of the number of times he had started making his way to Sebastian’s old office only to remember that he was no longer there.

He couldn’t wrap his head around this new configuration. If he closed his eyes, it felt like nothing had changed—like they still worked together, and he was still Sebastian’s associate, and it was just another late night with the best pizza Charles would’ve never found himself because the place looked outright seedy. But when he opened his eyes and looked around, he saw none of that. Everything was different.

The space between them, it felt different.

“I—”

Britta swung through the door with a large paper bag in hand, and Charles could practically smell Sebastian’s usual order. At least some things remained the same.

“Your one o’clock is postponed,” she said, sifting through the takeaway and placing some packaged food and utensils down on the coffee table. Charles peered at the kale salad in a container and made a face.

“What? Why. We need to—”

Britta leveled a look at Sebastian, and though Charles had seen them do this about a hundred times before, he paused with the growing sense that he was truly intruding and misplaced here. Just because he was hiding from the name partners of his own firm didn’t mean he had to go bother Sebastian, who had been so clearly ignoring him for some reason until Charles had all but barged his way in.

He opened his mouth to apologize and leave, but Britta pressed a wrapped sandwich into his hands and said, “Don’t come waltzing in unannounced and emptyhanded next time,” before heading for her desk.

By the time Charles found his bearings again, Sebastian had taken off his suit jacket and a seat in the armchair in his office’s own little lounge. Blue irises stared up at him, and Charles—

Charles grinned—preened, even—and sat on the sofa as he launched into a retelling of how one of the first-years had somehow managed to spill his hot cup of instant ramen all over a senior partner last week.

"Don't go."

Fingers curl around Seb's arm, trying to pull him back down on the bed. He's only just managed to get his shirt on, and was just about to try and locate his trousers, but the hand on him stops him from moving.

"Charles," he says, and makes a half-hearted attempt at tugging free. "I have to, or I'll be late."

"So?"

There's some shuffling from behind Seb, and then Charles is right there, pressed up against his back, planting a kiss against his neck.

"You can be late," Charles mutters against his skin, hands trailing down his front, and then up underneath his shirt. "Just this once, you are allowed to be a little late."

Seb draws in a breath, closes his eyes and tries to keep his resolve. "Charles, come on." He grabs hold of Charles' wandering hands holds them still. "You'll see me at the track later."

Charles hums, considering. "This is true," he says, "but..." He plants another kiss on Seb's neck. "I cannot do this at the track, can I?" He kisses just below his jaw, where he knows Seb is extra sensitive. It sends a shiver through Seb's body, and without thinking he angles his head just so, giving Charles a better angle.

He relaxes his grip on Charles' hands, and they start moving again, coming up to stroke over his nipples. "Please, Seb," Charles mutters, and Seb doesn't even know why he's bothered trying, because he can never resist Charles when he sounds like that. "Will you stay?"

"Fine," Seb says, and his voice is far too breathy for his own liking. Charles makes a pleased noise, and starts pulling at Seb's shirt to get it over his head. "Five more minutes, but then I really-"

He's cut off by Charles leaning in and connecting their lips.

In the end, Seb is 30 minutes late for the briefing. It was definitely worth it.

Charles feels hot under his collar; the Miami heat mixing with the alcohol in his blood and the nervous energy suddenly simmering through his body.

"Is it just me or is it very warm in here?" he asks, pulling at his shirt to try and get some air flow in between the fabric and his skin. "I can- maybe there is a problem with the air conditioning, I could-"

"It's fine, Charles," Seb says, interrupting him. He's sitting on the edge of Charles' hotel bed. His hair is sticking slightly to his forehead, but other than that it doesn't seem like he's affected by the sudden heat like Charles is. "Just- relax."

Charles takes a deep breath, tries to get his heartbeat to settle down. When he went out after the race, he hadn't expected to run into Seb. He hadn't expected to end up dancing with Seb. He hadn't expected the words that came tumbling out of his own mouth, muttered directly into Seb's ear in the middle of a crowded dance floor, do you want to get out of here?

And he certainly hadn't expected Seb to say yes; to follow him back to his hotel room with one hand attached to his lower back the entire time.

"Yes," Charles says. "Sorry, I am just..." He clears his throat, because he's really not sure how to explain it. Instead, he opens the minibar and grabs a couple of water bottles out of it, tossing one over to Seb.

He takes a big gulp, the cold water doing a decent job of cooling him down. He can feel Seb's eyes on him, watching him carefully.

"I can go," Seb says, voice gentle. "If you want. We can just- pretend this never happened. It's not a big deal, really."

Charles shakes his head. "No," he says, maybe a bit too quickly. "I mean, no I- I don't want you to go."

Seb still looks hesitant. "Are you sure?"

There are a lot of things Charles could say to that. He could tell Seb about how many times he's thought about this, how much he wants it. He could tell Seb that he misses him. He still sees him every other week, but it's not enough; it's never been enough for Charles, not even when they were teammates. No matter how much of Seb he gets, he always wants more.

But the words get stuck in his throat, and that's probably a good thing, because he doesn't want to scare Seb away, not when he's got him right where he's wanted him for years.

So instead of saying anything, he puts his waterbottle down on top of the minibar, and crosses the room in quick strides. He stands in front of Seb, places a gentle, careful hand on the side of his face, and nods.

A small smile slowly appears on Seb's face. "Good," he says. His hands reach out and settle on Charles' hips, thumbs stroking back and forth. "Because I really did not want to go."

Charles feels warm again, but it's different this time. Less suffocating.
