It wasn’t your fault that it had started as a crush on Fred Weasley first.
Fred always came first when you said Fred and George. He was the one that entered the room and took up all the space. Demanding everyone’s eyes on him. He craved it like oxygen, giving him a boost to do his next crazy stunt. Like he needed much help with that. He was the spark of an idea that would make it go off. That push of courage that you needed to go thorough with a crazy idea. Fred Weasley was like fireworks, fiery and loud and oh so very pretty.
And George Weasley. Well he was almost the same but also just the smallest bit different. George entered and room and took as much space as Fred but instead of sucking all the air into him, he would melt into the room. He would join it rather than taking it over. He thrived with attention on him but he didn’t ask for it, it just came for him. George was a bonfire that teenagers were having in the middle of an empty field late at night, still mischievous and burning but spreading the warmth around.
Anyone that told you that the twins were exactly the same were wrong, they were similar of course but still different.
So when Fred came into the potions class late one day and had to sit next to you, you could feel butterflies in your stomach. When he talked your ear off instead of actually helping with potions, not intentionally just more he couldn’t be bothered as he was explaining his next prank on the Slytherins, you started to like him more than just how he looked. The way his face lite up and excitement bursting out at him at the idea of this prank. You could feel your heart beat a little faster when he smiled at you.
And you thought, that was that. Back to living in the same area but apart. But Fred didn’t drop you after that class. Apparently, you had left your mark on him and amused him. He would search you out when you were sitting in the courtyard, walk you to class sometimes, leaning on your desk before it starts. Even invited you to butterbeer in Hogsmeade with him and his friends. That day started a friendship that lasted the rest of your life, and a secret crush you told no one about. Became friends with his friends. So it made sense that you would have fallen for him.
But George, George was unexpected. You didn’t know if you could pin point the moment that Fred became just a friend and George became more.
George was loudly laughing with you about a prank he pulled with Lee and Fred, his eyes bright and his grin almost cracked his face. And you started to notice the difference. Because George hand would find the small of your back without a thought when you needed to pass him. Or he was the first to realize you were starting to get overwhelmed with schoolwork or people, and would whisk you away to take a walk on the grounds. Sitting under one of the trees if the day was nice, watching the clouds move across the sky as he pointed out ridiculous shapes.
Watching him you even started to know the difference when you looked at them, it was just the smallest things. A mole here, a scar there. Nothing that really stood out in a quick inspection but when you took a minute, you would realize. Not to mention he would brag about being just the little bit taller. Just to annoy Fred. Until one day he smiled. And it seemed like the biggest difference in the world. Cause it wasn’t Fred’s smile that did that to you anymore, it was George’s now. Maybe it was that day that things switched.
When you got mixed up in a prank of his and Fred’s, he helped you clean yourself up while he laughed at you. When he made a particular great bludger hit, knocking Flint off his broom, you cheered a little louder when he gave you a wink. You weren’t sure then that is was for you, as half the girls around you giggled at that but you liked to pretend it was. After all you were the one he practiced all his pick up lines on.
And when the world got darker and you had to start worrying, he would find you late at night and the two of you would be up till the sun rose the next morning talking about your fears. You regretted it in your morning classes but you didn’t care too much. Because when it got too rough, George gave you his bed at night because you didn’t want to be alone. George became your safe space at some point.
The joy you watched as he ran away from Hogwarts on his broom, leaving chaos behind him. Sitting on the checkout counter as Fred and George were setting up the shop, your boys were always bright spots in a world of dark. Watching them thrive and leaving a mark on the world, it was a amount of joy that you could never explain. They were home. Besides Fred, doing what he loved best, running his shop, fighting against the bad guys. He was home. And you found your home right beside him.
So it wasn’t Fred’s fire that woke you up in the morning, it was Georges warmth.
So when the battle was won and you ran through the halls of Hogwarts screaming trying to find him. It was George who you ran up too, wrapping your arms around him and finally kissing him.
It was George that you had fallen for, not some little crush, but the kind that would leave you standing in front of your family and friends, years later confessing your love to each other. And when you told him that it started with a crush from Fred, he laughed. Because he always knew Fred would somehow be involved. He told you least you had the intelligence to pick the better twin in the end, kissed your forehead and walked away. Not a care. Because Fred had been the boy you first noticed but George was the whole that captured your heart.
