If the songs = “secret code,” what’s the message?
I was thinking about the recent interview Paul did with “The One Show” (BBC) when he confirmed to the interviewer that the Lennon/McCartney songbook is “the secret code” he’s referring to in the song The Days We Left Behind.
So then I started thinking, if the songs are the code, what are the themes or messages across these songs that they were expressing to each other? And how does that relate to “the promise” mentioned in the same song?
steph and cass have developed a code (a lot of it is gestural, but some of it isn't) that only they know, and they use it to talk to just each other in all sorts of situations (esp when they really shouldn't). the rest of the family knows about its existence, but none of them can crack it bc steph and cass are always changing things and adding weird inside jokes to it. steph very intentionally will obviously say something to cass in code in front of the other family members just to make them question if she's talking about them (sometimes she is, but sometimes she's just saying random shit bc it's funny, or even nonsensical things). cass thinks this is very funny, so she always goes along with it. they also use it while doing vigilantism, and if questioned about its existence, they're always like well it's very good for bat stuff.

As a Trauma Thing, we've always been obsessed with secret codes — after all, it was one of the only ways we felt we could express ourselves freely at home. (Plus we're obsessed with secret organisations too, so that tracks.)
Nowadays, these codes are an inherent part of our communication. In the physical world, we use them in our notes so we can write in public and avoid being outed as a system. They rely on context only we have — inside jokes; references to personal memories and thoughts. Codes look like long "strings" of letters, symbols and numbers, some of which are words from other languages.
eg:etoP&ndora-d7m11y25 (example: this is a system secret from 7 Nov 2025. "eto" is a transliteration of "this" in Russian and "P&ndora" refers to the myth of Pandora's box; the ampersand signifies that the note is about plurality.) While some parts are easier to decode, it's hard to interpret the plural themes if you're a singlet.
The names of our digital notes are cryptic, but not coded. For example, Kintsugi is about our experiences as a traumagenic system, how society sees the traumatised as "broken", and theories on how the brain adapts to hardship. A file on our desktop called "On Traumatogenesis" would be suspicious; a file called "Kintsugi" is easier to explain away.
We had made our own alphabets when we were younger at school just to write whatever we wanted without others being able to read, and it was typically out of boredom, but that's unrelated to our plurality. Though we might've vented more often in those alphabets to keep it secret.
Maybe some other closeted plurals can relate to using codes and niche references to communicate with each other tho?
