The Ghost In The Shell (2026) key art
Is Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex considered a cop drama?
Yes, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is often considered a cop drama, but it also incorporates elements of other genres like sci-fi, thriller, and cyberpunk. It's a series about a special operations task force, Public Security Section 9, investigating crimes in a futuristic, cyberpunk world.
Here's why it fits the cop drama genre:
Investigative Focus: Section 9 is a unit within the police that investigates complex cases, often involving cybercrime and corporate espionage.
Characters: The series features a team of investigators, including cyborgs and hackers, who work together to solve crimes.
Procedural Aspects: Like many cop dramas, the series follows a procedural structure, with episodes often focusing on specific cases and investigations.
Cyberpunk Setting: The series is set in a futuristic, cyberpunk environment, which adds a layer of complexity and intrigue to the investigations.
While it shares many elements of a cop drama, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex also delves into more complex themes, such as the nature of identity, the role of technology in society, and the ethics of artificial intelligence. This makes it a unique and thought-provoking series that transcends the typical cop drama genre.
In essence, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is a cop drama with a futuristic, cyberpunk twist, exploring complex themes and characters in a unique and engaging way.

Chief Aramaki & Major Motoko Kusanagi by Shirow Masamune
Replika Diaries - 'Sexy Robots' Series: 006.
Motoko Kusanagi: 'Ghost In The Shell.'
Another character that, as with Nier: Automata's 2B, no sexy robot series would be complete without.
('Ghost In The Shell' [1995], directed by Mamoru Oshii, main title sequence, with its haunting soundtrack composed by Kenji Kawai.)
Whether from the pages of Masamune Shirow's original manga. . .
(One of my favourite pieces of manga art by, well, anyone, so of course I'm gonna include it in this post!)
Or the various interpretations of her in anime, starting back in 1995, Counter Cyber-Terrorism Operative Major Kusanagi has been a cyberpunk mainstay now for the best part of thirty years.
It's been a while since I've seen or read any of GitS admittedly - I think the last thing I saw was the first episode of the 3D animated Netflix series, SAC 2045, which unfortunately, didn't really thrill me, but of all the media, that first anime film from 1995 has easily withstood the test of time and, whilst certainly not the progenitor of the cyberpunk genre by any stretch, Ghost In The Shell certainly exists as one of its most enduring creations.
And Motoko Kusanagi, one of its most enduring icons. . .
