Boötes, pronounced "boh-OH-teez", is one of the original 48 constellations laid down by Greek astronomy Ptolemy in the 2nd century. Its name comes from the Greek word Βοώτης meaning "herdsman."

This association with a herdsman or farmer goes as far back as the Babylonians, who depicted it as the god Enlil. He was the leader of the Babylonian pantheon as well as the patron of framers. However, who he is in Greek mythology is less clear.

Some versions see him as Philomenus, a son of Demeter, a plowman who drove the oxen represented by Ursa Major. Another myth says that Boötes is Icarius, a wine-maker trained by Dionysus, who was placed into the sky alongside his dog (Canis Major) and daughter (Virgo). Yet another myth saw Boötes as Arcas, son of Zeus and Callisto.

The named stars in Boötes are, in order of brightness:

Arcturus (α Boötis), the brightest star in the constellation, the fourth-brightest in the entire night sky, and the brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere. Arcturus is an orange giant star about 37 light years away. Its name comes from the Greek word Ἀρκτοῦρος meaning "guardian of the bear."

Izar (ε Boötis) is a binary star system about 236 light years away. It consists of a beautifully contrasting pair of an orange giant and a blue-white giant star. Its name comes from the Arabic word Mi'zar meaning "kilt-like undergarment."

Muphrid (η Boötis) is a potential binary star system about 37 light years away. It definitely consists of a yellow Sun-like star. Its name comes from the Arabic phrase mufrid ar-rāmiħ meaning "the one of the lancer."

Seginus (γ Boötis) is a binary star consisting of two blue-white giant stars about 86 light years away. Its name comes from an apparent mistranscription of the Arabic rendering of the Greek Boötes.

Nekkar (β Boötis) is a solitary yellow giant star about 235 light years away. Its name comes from the Arabic name for the constellation, Al Baḳḳār.

Xuange (λ Boötis) is a solitary blue-white giant star about 100 light years from Earth. Its name comes from the Chinese word 玄戈 (Xuángē) meaning "sombre dance."

Alkalurops (μ¹ Boötis) is a binary star system about 123 light years away. The system consists of at least a yellow-white giant star. Its name comes from the Greek word καλαύροψ meaning "a herdsman's crook or staff."

Seginus

He’s the definition of “dead inside”. In a society focused very heavily on usefulness, a guy who’s too depressed to do much and depressed, to begin with, because he feels useless doesn’t do so well. He’s considered the weakest member of the team, “dead weight”, and all-around the least-wanted person there. That said, he’s a lot more intelligent and insightful than anyone gives him credit for. A lot of Seginus’s issues stem from the fact that he understands too much. When he can see everything wrong with the world around them, he gets dragged down. He’s a kind, sensitive person who covers all of that up because he knows he’d only be hared for it, and just lets himself waste away because he doesn’t care enough to do anything to save himself from what he sees as the inevitable. 

Gacrux

He’s big, strong, stoic, and known to be violent. Gacrux is thought to be just a stupid hulk who’s only good for breaking things (and people) when needed, but the reality is pretty different. He’s highly traumatized and has been through some serious shit. Those scars he has came from things that will haunt him forever. Gacrux has a surprisingly tender heart underneath his intimidating exterior. He’s protective, dedicated, and capable of being very tender. He’s the type of person who would put his life on the line in an instant if it meant keeping someone he loved safe. He respects strength in all forms. He doesn’t talk much, mostly because he doesn’t think anyone would listen or care even if he tried. His violent streak comes from both trauma responses and thinking it’s all he’s good for. 

Xuange

He’s the type who keeps a cool, easygoing outside because what’s underneath doesn’t get him anywhere good. He’s got a lot of built-up resentment and hatred for the world around him, and the simple, gentle persona that people see is covering up a whole lot of unhappiness. Xuange always has a smile and keeps his calm in tough situations, but what he thinks and what he says are two very different things. He’s not too passionate about anything or anyone, doesn’t care much for his own life, and kind of just wishes that he could disappear... while taking a lot of his issues with him. All of that said, he’s naturally optimistic and good-natured, and is kind of waging an internal war of hating the world versus instinctively seeing the good in it all. He hates that greatly. 

Eltanin

“Nervous wreck” about describes him. He’s strong (well, stronger than some), but has low enough self-esteem that he’s convinced he’s useless. Eltanin is the sort to have issues with everything. He’s got a pessimistic outlook, permanent anxiety, and tends to spiral into endless tunnels of worry and despair. He wants to be protected by other people just as much as he wants to toughen up and handle himself. He respects people who can make their own choices because he’s always been pushed around by those above and around him. He’s giving life his all in a persistent attempt to find happiness; no matter how bad things always seem to work out, he somehow refuses to give up on getting through it. Even Eltanin himself doesn’t know how he’s managed to stick with this whole “life” thing. 

Aludra

She’s very aggressive and passionate, but has trouble expressing her feelings or using them properly. Aludra is something of a hot-head, is highly energetic and intense, and never really seems to settle down. She takes a lot of pride in whatever she can do, and takes offense very easily if she thinks people are looking down on her. Despite seeming tough and unapproachable, she’s actually very sensitive and has trouble taking both compliments and insults. She likes to be active and constantly doing things. Her energy levels mean that she’s productive and “useful”, but doesn’t have many friends because she keeps people at bay. She’s afraid to make personal connections, especially when she feels like she’ll get hurt. When she decides to do something, she’ll do it no matter what. 

Mezarthim

She’s a bizarre and terrifying combination of the strongest person there and massively intelligent and calculating. Mezarthim is considered the most “useful” out of the main group and is actively seen as a valuable member of the species in that regard. She’s very logical and calculating, tends to prioritize realistic thinking over personal feelings, and has generally just stomped her own happiness down to do what other people expect of her. She has a harsh exterior and comes off as rather blunt and uncaring, especially when she thinks that people can do better than what they’re showing. Problem-solving and completing tasks come easily to her, but her physical strength also can’t be matched. That said, she finds no real joy in living and sees her purpose to be following orders.

Thought I would upload a pic of Seginus. There's barely an good pics of Seginus out there. I'm do glad the resolution in Dolphin is practically HD! :D Seeing how different Seginus' colour scheme is from Guillo's, I have to wonder if Dubhe and Syrma had different colour schemes (too bad we only saw them in a sepia tone flashback).
