OC-tober Day 17: Safety

Home was the one place where Selyn felt safe - her mothers were the hero of Tamriel and an assassin of the Morag Tong, after all. But with such powerful figures in her family, it was easy to overlook another, subtler source of comfort and safety for Selyn. Well, as ‘subtle’ as a white senche tiger in Morrowind could be, anyway.

Shur’azan had taken to her the very day her mothers brought her home from the temple. He was cautious at first, aware of the threat he might present to a scared child. But when Selyn started warming up to him, oh, there was little anyone could do to pry the tiger from his young Dunmer charge.

Selyn figured she knew why Shuri was so protective of her. Her mothers had spoken of how they’d stumbled across him - a lone tiger cub smuggled from his home, kept in a cage and underfed by dealers who’d planned to sell him for a handsome sum of gold. Aneril and Vareysa had freed him then, and raised him to the strong adult he was today.

Perhaps he was repaying their act of kindness, or he sensed a kindred spirit in the thin, traumatised orphan rescued from slavers by the same women who’d saved him. It didn’t matter to Selyn either way - all she needed to know was that Shur’azan had spent many nights watching over her, walked many miles beside her, and coaxed many giggles from her with his antics. 

He was a precious companion, even a beloved brother, and Selyn hoped his magically-enhanced lifespan would allow him to stay with the family for centuries to come.
