We screwed up. We misunderstood our readership and our role. We disappointed our readers. And rather than beat around the bush, we're going to just straight-up apologize now, and emphasize that we do understand the seriousness of the allegations in the Penn State case. We simply wanted to have a conversation about a serious topic — the language used in sensitive stories — but instead caused a firestorm. We're sorry.
