Kenneth Washington, who was the last surviving main cast member of the CBS series 'Hogan's Heroes,' died on July 18 at 88.

Kenneth Washington, who made several TV appearances and was the last surviving main cast member of the CBS series “Hogan’s Heroes,” died on July 18. He was 88. A familiar guest star on TV series in the 1960s, Washington’s appearances included roles in “Star Trek,” “I Dream of Jeannie,” “My Three Sons,” “The Name of the Game,” “Petticoat Junction,” “Marcus Welby, M.D.,” “Adam-12” and “Dragnet 1967.” He landed his “Hogan’s Heroes” role as Sergeant Baker in 1970, but the show was canceled the following year by CBS. Washington’s work in the 1970s included an appearance in the 1973 film “Westworld” as well as roles in the TV series “The Paul Lynde Show,” “The F.B.I.,” “The Rockford Files” and “Police Story.” One of his last TV appearances was alongside Jasmine Guy in “A Different World” in 1989. Born in Ethel, Miss., Washington and his family moved to California, where he was raised in the Bay Area in Redwood City and San Francisco. After earning his first screen test, he relocated to Los Angeles to begin his acting career. Among Washington’s other credits were the TV movies “J. Edgar Hoover,” “Money on the Side” and “Our Family Business.” Following his acting career, he returned to school and earned his college degree from Loyola Marymount University. He became an instructor at the same university, teaching a course that focused on Black actors in film. From there, he taught classes in oral interpretation and speech at Southwest College. Washington married Alice Marshall, the former editor-in-chief at Wave Newspapers in South Los Angeles and film reviews editor at Variety, in 2001.  He is survived by his wife; brother Johnnie; sister Aaliyah Akbar; three children, Kim Lee, Kenneth Jr. and Quianna Stokes-Washington; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Ok so Pierre Pouvoir used to be a star on a TV show where he played a superhero, it was unfortunately cancelled early, and his life has kinda been empty ever since

SO ONE DAY A TON OF MONSTERS MADE OUT OF BREAD ATTACK THE WORLD AAAAAAAAAAGGGH, basically weird science stuff (“we were too focused on whether we could blah blah blah”) and while the worlds in panic, Pierre sees it as his chance to relive his (admittedly short) glory days, and after he takes out a huge bunch of bread monsters, he is enlisted to fight the rest of them by Sergeant Baker, head of the ABDF (Anti Bread Defense Force) which exists as of five minutes ago

I saw people in the tags talking about how Baker doesn't get enough love and honestly... yeah, I totally agree and I'm also guilty of ignoring him... So here he is -- I'm a fan of the headcanon that he and Kinch were both there at the same time. I like the idea that Kinch trained Baker on the radio as his backup.

A WIP I have just sort of sitting. Started out trying to explore Baker a bit more but it dissolved a bit, as most of my stories do. I like it so far. It's just sort of nice.

Gregory Alan Isakov's 'Dandelion wine' was released in 2009. However the song fit with the scene so i kept it.

It was a hazy day in late August. The men were stripped down to either t-shirts, tank tops or shirtless. Klink allowed it, with the caveat that pants must be worn.

It was late afternoon, when Baker came out of the rec hall with the guitar.

Newkirk was knitting while Carter napped shirtless leaning on his back. Baker came back over to barracks two and hopped up on the barrel beside the door.

The men were littered about, lounging inside the barracks or somewhere out in the shade. LeBeau was sitting with 7 other men in the volleyball/ football court. They were rolling the ball back and forth underneath the net.

Baker strummed the guitar a few times and tuned the strings. He then started to strum, calm and slow, in the key of C.

Newkirk stopped and leaned his head against the barracks wall, listening as the gentle notes filtered through the air.

“Summer days, are like a magazine,” Baker sang, his voice carried with the soft melody of the guitar, “a magazine, a magazine...”

Some of the men in the volleyball court leaned back onto their elbows as a soft breeze snuck through the compound. The guard across the compound sighed and leaned against the railing to the Kommandant’s office.

“Cutting grass, for gasoline,” Baker continued, “for gasoline, so I can see you soon.” He closed his eyes and leaned his own head against the barracks wall.

Newkirk grinned softly and continued knitting. Now that he heard it again, he could make out the time signature. He liked picking out the technical bits of songs. It was fun, since he had a good ear for that sort of thing. Technically one could dance to this song, nice and slow. With a ¾ signature and 111 beats per minute, it would make a nice song for an end of the night dance.

Two more of the volleyball men dropped onto their backs and sighed. Lebeau opened his eyes in time to quickly lean over and grab the ball before it passed. He didn’t bother returning it to the other side. The final man dropped off, the only sign of life the steady rise and fall of his chest.

LeBeau knew this song and swayed along with the melody. It wasn’t the first time Baker had played it for them. LeBeau reached into his pocket and pulled out his old harmonica. At the start of the next phrase he joined in.

Baker was pleasantly surprised by the accompaniment. He chuckled lightly at the Frenchman and continued. “Fall swooned. Left… me… drunk in a field.”

Carter joined in, singing the harmony.

“Dandelion wine, for a year.”

Newkirk was somewhat surprised. Carter had a good voice, he already knew that. He just thought Carter had been sleeping. He was too relaxed to care though. He didn’t mind being used for a pillow anyway.

“And I packed… up… the dust, of all that I own. Handkerchief... hung from a pole.

Baker finished on his own, “I rolled out… the day that the apples fell…” He hummed softly as the song ended.

Kinch strolled out of the barracks a short while later. Baker eyed him and smiled. He watched as Kinch came over and stood next to him. He was absent-mindedly strumming a few calm melodies. Nothing exciting.

Hogan and Klink exited the office and were visibly confused that half the men in camp were dozing or completely subdued. Klink shot a bewildered look at Hogan. Hogan simply shrugged and walked off, towards the barracks.
