Momo doesn’t hear the rest of Kaminari’s spiel detailing all of the fun things that will be happening at the festival; she’s too caught up in the way Setsuna’s face falls. She wants, more than anything, to reach out and take her hand—wants to press a soothing kiss to her knuckles and promise her they’ll figure out a way to still have a fun date night together. But with the risk of exposing them both, all Momo can do is press her lips into a thin smile that she hopes comes across as reassuring. It won’t be easy with all of their classmates wandering around, but Momo knows how to strategize. She’s smart, and she’s determined to spend time at the festival with Setsuna somehow. She’ll devise a plan. She’ll do whatever it takes to put a smile on Setsuna’s face, because the crestfallen look she’s wearing now breaks Momo’s heart more than any interrupted plans alone ever could.

She shuffles along the log until her leg is pressed firmly against Setsuna’s, then drops her head down on her shoulder. Setsuna tilts her own head until it’s resting atop Momo’s, and just like that they’re locked together, every part of them intertwined. It’s thrilling. Like this, Momo can hear Setsuna’s heartbeat, fluttering slightly from the contact but nonetheless steady. Somehow, that regular rhythm of thump, thump, thump is more comforting to Momo than all the sounds of the forest. All the sights, even.

Momo goes to the forest whenever she can't sleep, the sights and sounds entirely occupying her racing mind. Somehow, it all pales in comparison when Setsuna joins her.
