Persistent Eosinophilic Asthma
I am pretty new so no spoilers but I am pretty sure that Zagreus dies when he gets to the overworld is because he has asthma.
Walking through snow and then getting hit in the face with your mother's pollen is rough.
Asthma, What is it?
Alt text: Asthma is a common lung condition that occasionally causes breathing difficulties. Asthma is caused by swelling (inflammation) of the breathing tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. This makes the tubes highly sensitive, so they temporarily narrow. It may happen randomly or after exposure to a trigger. Although asthma can normally be kept under control, it's still a serious condition that can cause a number of problems. This is why it's important to follow your treatment plan and not ignore your symptoms if they're getting worse. There's also a risk of severe asthma attacks, which can be life threatening.

I have at least three asthma attacks in a week because of my thc vaping habit. I keep telling myself that it’s my fault so I don’t have a right to complain about it.
Like. Me in pain. Vapes for pain. Asthma attack. Inhaler. Keep smoking. Repeat every day.exhaustion.
Even then weed doesn’t always help. Sometimes it’s just throwing a blanket over my sciatic pain, my general limb pain, my exhaustion, the slight tingling and burning of my legs and arms.
So I’m in this delicate balance of “how much can I smoke to not fuck my lungs up more than they are but alleviate the pain from existing with my rising tolerance?”
And
“How much can I smoke to function in my day without ruining the little respect my peers hold for me?”
And fighting with myself to finally get a mobility aid that I’ve been thinking of getting since middle school.
And
“How much coffee do I need to get energy without my guts imploding (I’m supposed to have chronic constipation but for the last month the opposite has been the case. 3-5 times a day is too exhausting.)
I keep getting these weird episodes that feel like anxiety attacks but also it's like every day and the worse its ever been since I came out of hospital so I also feel like they're NOT just anxiety. So basically I'm still very breathless, struggling to wear a mask now whilst walking (and I never had issues before), I get this odd dizziness that I really can't explain. It's not like how it usually is for me. It's almost like I lose a few seconds then I'm back in the room and feel off kilter. Chest pain almost all the time, my heart rate is generally very high but when I asked about it was told to "not stress" and "try yoga" because I can't have beta-blockers due to having asthma. Could it low oxygen? My oxygen never really went fully back to normal before I was discharged. I've had so many ECGs and even echos before and nothing wrong with my heart - it just beats so fast all the time that maybe since the attack it's just not chilled out even a little, like tachycardia surely causes anxiety-like symptoms so maybe that? I'm kinda at a loss as to what's going on but I just know something doesn't feel right? Don't necessarily think it's anything serious but it's really impacting my day to day massively now.
Just wanna edit to say it could also totally be anxiety - I'm not minimising the impact anxiety / anxiety attacks have on people at all. I've just never had it this bad / consistently and never had the dizziness. Usually around my period I have days of bad anxiety - but it feels like that almost all the time now but with added spicy extras thrown in.
So I have something that I’d like to ask the good people of Tumblr (Tumblrites? Tumblronians?) about, because I’m wondering where I stand with something and if anyone else feels this way sometimes.
For those of you who don’t know, aka nobody because this is the first time I’m mentioning this on Tumblr, I have severe asthma (chronic) and chronic hip pain in both hips that has slowly gotten worse over the past six months, with the pain in my right hip more sensitive than the left since the right one popped out of socket a little while ago. I have an inhaler for my asthma and I get out of breath really easy, like walking up the stairs easy, and I do physical therapy for my hip/pelvic pain.
My question is this: because both conditions are chronic and they affect my day to day life (walking, sitting, and sometimes laying down all cause my hips to hurt and walking, both up and downstairs and just regularly cause me to lose my breath, it takes me like five tries to take a deep breath, and I constantly feel short of breath) do I count in the chronic pain/illness community? Because my chronic hip pain isn’t caused by anything other than extremely poor hip strength, and I’m so used to having asthma that I wonder if me and my pain count among others even though it’s not due to an underlying cause and isn’t as extreme as someone else’s.
To inconsiderate smokers and those who don't understand asthma:
Hello. I have severe eosinophilic asthma. I am currently hoarse, having drainage and some troubles when I breathe. This has been going on for three days now. The cause? A bad asthma attack coming from the overwhelming stench of cigarette and cigar smoke on my co workers' clothes. They smell like walking talking cigarette factories on fire. I began to lose my voice, gasp, cough and even gag as my airways tried to struggle to open up again. All of this while wearing my mask too. (And this isn't even the worst attack I've had btw)
The next day there was some crackling sounds when I breathed and a bit of whistling too at different times. I felt like I had got run over by a monster truck. There was tightness in my chest and I was becoming lethargic. I managed to go to the gym but started coughing again and when I got home i was hoarse...badly. I mean Mickey Mouse on helium bad. We called into my pulmonologist's office but he wasn't there so we talked to his RN (I think that's what she was??? I don't remember as these last three days have been a blur) and she put me on five day prednisone (40 mg 1 a day for 5 days). I was on the same thing last month almost the exact same time last month. Back then it perked me up and i felt better save panic attacks and disassociating due to it making my anxiety worse. This time though it helped with my voice but I was wiped the fuck out. Did 20 mg the first day. Then the full 40 mg yesterday and today. I went to go to help my maternal grandpa move to another apartment in his retirement home and I was huffing and puffing from carrying small things and kept having to sit down. Still I thought I could make it to work. Eventually i figured out i wouldn't be able to make it through an active work day where I'm on my feet for approximately 7 hours (1 hour of sitting down which encompasses my two 15 minute breaks and 30 minute lunch break). Among my tasks is lifting heavy laundry bags into carts and pushing the carts (which are low to the ground) BY MYSELF to the elevator to the basement so that laundry can do them the next day. Normally there are 2 UAs save weekend nights. We take turns working the weekends.
Anyways, I was so exhausted walking from one room to another made me feel like I was going to pass the fuck out. The love of my life came over to see me and he had to help me walk on flat ground because I almost fell into the wall a couple times...in the house I've been in since I was 2 years old. (So about 24 years). I felt disoriented and weak. Sitting up exhausted me. Laughing hard made me start having an asthma attack. I went to a convient care like place last night and they said I sounded good but to rest and take off work the next day. I have now missed three days of work due to trying to recover. I am on several different asthma medications and hoping to get on a biologic injection to help me manage my asthma better. The kicker? I have these episodes every other month and sometimes twice a month all because people can't wait to have a fucking smoke break. They take too many smoke breaks, far more breaks than we are allowed. The rank smell coming off them is so strong I can't fucking breathe around them. I have to take days to recover from a couple people's bad choices.
This is what you do when you light up multiple times at work to people like me who never asked for chronic health issues. And especially any patients you may have. Please try and find a way to not smoke as much and to maybe spray yourselves down before coming inside. I know smoking is an addiction. Trust me, I know that. But please try and think of others. Your actions could be the difference between being able to go to work for someone, hospitalization or even death. Please think before you act.
TL;DR: because my co workers stink of cigarette smoke I have to take three days to recover feeling like shit the whole time. And this happens every other month sometimes twice a month. All due to my co workers actions. Please stop smoking in healthcare settings. You're not helping anybody. Those of us with asthma can't help having reactions to our asthma triggers. Please be understanding.
