Today I learned of this website.

They list reasons why the shapefile needs to be phased out, and propose some replacements and their pros and cons.

alone: How does your OC deal with loneliness? Have they ever been completely alone before? How do they act when there's no one around to see them?

oooh this is a good one.... SHAPEFILE grew up in a lab surrounded by scientists constantly observing him, and although he doesnt remember much about it, he definitely has an ingrained sense of feeling weird on his own. i think he probably finds being alone and undistracted very perturbing. if hes alone, hes probably doing GIS stuff and/or homework.

otherwise i feel like they fill their life with various odd characters to amuse them and keep them from feeling lonely. not that they'd admit that, and not that it would show based on how they treat people

really, when FILEs alone i feel like FILE just goes full autism mode. stim city. maybe those untapped traumas memories from FILEs childhood start to seep in... who knows

bound: Has your OC ever been imprisoned or captured? What happened? How did they get out? Did the experience leave any scars?

FILE was pretty much kept imprisoned for the first 13 years of his life, which, again, he does not remember but still has lingering emotional scars from. as for what happened, he has no way of knowing, but hes fairly certain it was bad. part of why he doesn't think too deeply about his issues and hates being alone with his thoughts is because of the weird triggers and fetishes he has that he can't place the origin of. its just NULL data. he does have scars, all over his body, but he was told they were all part of the process of creating him. frankenstein lookin ass.

they only got out by waking up age 13 (so they're told) with no memories, being told who they were (supposed to be?) and being assigned an adoptive family.

hate: What does your OC hate? Why? How do they act towards the object of their hatred?

the funnier and less twisted answer to this question is open source software. they fight constantly with Quin, the local naturalist dyke, who insists that Esri software (again, FILE believes they were literally created to shill this stuff) sucks and that proprietary software shouldnt exist. also, they hatefuck

as for the real answer, it's FILEs second thesis advisor (dont worry about what happened to the first one) Dr. Tan, who has taken an unfortunate liking to FILE, with whom FILE has a deeply questionable relationship FILE has very weird feelings about. FILE knows their dynamic is abusive but FILE feels like FILE brings it upon FILEself by being, on some level, into it.

when Tan's around in public, FILE gets very closed off and defensive, trying to put distance between them. in private, the facade fades quickly and FILE finds themself feeling painfully reliant on the affection and affirmation from the person they hate the most

skin: How comfortable is your OC in their skin? Do they grapple with anything that lives inside them—a beast, a curse, a failure, a monster? How do they face the smallest, weakest, most horrible version of themself? Are they able to acknowledge it at all?

ahhhh yes, the kicker to everything above. SHAPEFILE is so uncomfortable in their own skin it hurts. as has been the theme of these answers, they are in no way prepared to face the reality inside themself. what might that reality be? i think FILE's nightmare scenario would be to find out there was another path for him all along. that he doesnt need to be a machine to be a man, that he doesnt need to be a man to be a machine

thats part of why FILE hates Tan so much. tan acknowledges this potential, but also takes advantage of it. this all contributes to FILEs weird feelings about the already weird situation

accepting that they can be someone other than the person [ERROR: Data type 'person' not specified] ??? they were prescribed to be is the one thing they need the most to self-actualize, but SHAPEFILE is so far removed from the self. SHAPEFILE is just points, lines, and polygons. SHAPEFILE is just space.

but if he acknowledges it, he acknowledges that there's nothing special about him.

hello! about that OC ask game: betrayal, break, desire, fear, and secret.

this is SHAPEFILE hes (sort of?) a TMA fan character. he serves the web and to a lesser extent the vast and was made in a lab to do GIS (geospatial data science) but perhaps theres more to life than that who knows he hasnt figured it out yet

betrayal: Has your OC ever been betrayed by someone they thought they could trust? Has your OC ever betrayed someone who trusted them?

hes been betrayed in the sense that he slowly realizes that everything he was raised to believe (see: that he was created to be a corporate shill for proprietary GIS software) was not necessarily a concrete fact, which starts to break down the intricate web (TMA web literally) of the world he operates on.

as for betraying others, oh yeah, he does it all the time. doesn't even flinch. lying and selling come easily to him, and so does killing, so long as its not him that gets his hands dirty. his gods listen, and they are not benign

break: What would cause your OC to break down completely? What do they look like when that happens? Has anyone ever seen them at their lowest?

it would probably take a true shattering of his identity as a product. the moment he GENUINELY realizes that hes actually just a person who was groomed and not a product designed to serve a purpose, he'll lose his mind.

so, he doesn't realize it.

desire: What's one thing your OC wants more than anything in the world? Are they open with that desire? Why or why not? What would they do to fulfill it?

he'll tell you that he wants to work for Esri and shill ArcGIS like he wa designed to. he doesn't want to be a failed prototype, like the ones who came before him. he wants to fulfill his destiny.

but, still, that's not what he really wants. he hasn't even unlocked that yet. he's not even real enough, by his own standards, to have deep-seated desires of his own.

however, that's not to say he still doesn't give into smaller desires. hes a bit of a sex addict. in fact, his creators never told him he was transgender (see: men get farther ahead in the workplace!!) until he first had sex and someone pointed out that most dudes didnt have a cunt. he was like. oh.

(arguably this is a form of betrayal too, waking up mind-wiped with a sex change you didnt exactly ask for but weren't even aware of. but hes not exactly complaining either, just confused)

fear: What is your OC's greatest fear? What do they do when confronted with it? Are they open with their fear, or do they hide it away?

probably that he'll never get that corporate job he was made for. like i said above, it would shatter him. he definitely isnt open about it. hes convinced if he works hard enough he can make it to the top

Le fusioni e i confini dei Comuni italiani 2014

La tendenza è oramai accertata, i Comuni italiani sempre più spesso si uniscono dando vita a Unioni di Comuni o addirittura si fondono in nuove entità comunali. I motivi di questi movimenti sono da ricercare innanzitutto nella necessità di realizzare economie accorpando la gestione dei servizi nonchè nella opportunità di unire realtà troppo piccole permettendo loro di avere sufficiente 'forza' per rispondere ai nuovi bisogni. Nel solo 2014 sinora ci sono state 24 fusioni di Comuni e altre sono in cantiere, tante quante se ne sono avute dal 1930 al 2013, segno di una chiara strategia 'accorpatrice' (qui le parole del presidente dell'ANCI Fassino) . Ci sarebbe poi da scrivere un intero post sui nomi dei nuovi Comuni, quasi tutti generati per contatenazione dei nomi dei Comuni componenti (le fusioni non vanno d'accordo con il campanilismo dei nostri paesi, c'è da augurarsi che la cosa non sia ricorsiva , ci troveremmo con nomi kilometrici :) ). Questa notevole attività di modifica delle entità amministrative si riflette ovviamente anche sui confini comunali, i quali vengono ridisegnati con notevole frequenza. Per chi lavora con i dati geografici risulta quindi difficile rimanere aggiornato, tanto più che l'ISTAT mette a disposizione solo i confini comunali del 2011. Anche io per elaborare la mappa dei redditi dei Comuni italiani ho dovuto fare un lavoro di corripondenze poichè i dati del MEF sono forniti su basi comunali più aggiornate rispetto ai confini 2011 dell' ISTAT (nei dati del MEF sono presenti già molti comuni fusi che invece risultano ancora separati nei dati ISTAT). Per ovviare al problema ho creato un dataset che consente di fare la corrispondenza tra i Comuni del 2011 e i Comuni del 2014, in particolare nel dataset c'è la corripondenza tra 2011 e Gennaio 2014 e tra 2011 e Febbraio 2014. Infatti i dati del MEF che ho trattato si riferiscono alla situazione a Gennaio 2014, successivamente però ci sono state ulteriori fusioni di Comuni. Per mezzo di tale dataset ho poi costruito lo shapefile dei confini dei Comuni italiani a Febbraio 2014, qui rappresentato con una mappa che mostra in colore diverso tutti i Comuni che si sono fusi dal 2011 al 2014/02 (le fusioni sinora coinvolgono solo il Centro-Nord). Penso che sia il dataset di corrispondenze che lo shapefile possano rivelarsi utili per coloro che operano su dati a livello comunale. Sarebbe auspicabile, vista la tendenza in corso, che l'ISTAT rilasciasse periodicamente un dataset di corrispondenze che tenga conto delle fusioni di Comuni consentendo a tutti di ridisegnare i confini comunali ad una certa data.
