Hispanics in South Carolina: A map I designed recently
It’s not often my work gets posted for the public to see so when it does, I love being able to share.
Here’s a new take on a ring map I did last summer for an infographic exploring Hispanics in South Carolina and how they compare to the rest of the Southeast US.

Cartographer Musings
Here are some things I’ve learned along the way, being in a fast-paced academic GIS & cartography environment:
Don’t take it personally if you make 5 maps and only 1 gets used in the final product. Be glad the 1 got used.
Sometimes a map is a conversation starter. They may see the beautiful map you designed and then wonder what it’d look like with a different measure added on top. Take it as a compliment, and then remember to try those things yourself next time.
Always be ready to explain why you did what you did. Halo behind the county labels in blue--Why? Data classified into equal intervals and not natural breaks--Why?
Making a couple of slightly differing versions of a map is always good if you have the time. Maybe one map classifies the data around the mean with a divergent color scheme, and another classifies into natural breaks in a blue gradient. Perhaps neither is wrong, but it will prompt others to think about the message and help them make a better product as well.
If the software you’re using has a spellchecker tool, use it.
The less you can do manually, the less room there is for error.
Print our your map, export it in a few formats to see if there are any deviations in the process from how it looks on your screen.

They list reasons why the shapefile needs to be phased out, and propose some replacements and their pros and cons.

GISCorps is run by a Core Committee who e-meet monthly but e-communicate daily. Since its inception in October 2003, the Corps has attracted over 4,800 volunteers from 117 countries. To date, GISCorps has deployed 1,348 volunteers (from 77 countries) to 204 missions in 67 countries around the globe. These volunteers have contributed over 56,000 working hours towards those missions.

The Modifiable Areal Unit Problem (MAUP) in the news!
This was a sobering read for me, since I’m a geographer that does spatial analysis most of the time at the ZIP code level.
In the ZIP code’s (or ZCTA’s) defense I will say this: ZIP codes offer a nice balance between being something most people know about, but can also serve as an area unit smaller than county level making geographers like me happy.
Sometimes it’s just the easiest choice for all parties involved. But this article reminds me that just because it’s easy for everyone doesn’t mean it’s to everyone’s benefit.
Handout from the Spatial Humanities Workshop
Last week my coworker and I held a workshop for the Spatial Humanities group at USC, which is part of the Center for Digital Humanities group on campus. Our workshop didn’t go over how to do GIS or make maps, but how to create and find GIS data.
The audience was composed of various students, faculty and staff in humanities fields at USC that perhaps knew a little about mapping but didn’t know where to find data relevant to their research, so they approached us about doing a presentation. Here’s parts of the handout we gave to the attendees, hope you like it!

Feeling relieved
Just held a workshop on GIS resources for students, staff and faculty at the university I work at. We covered what GIS data is and where to find free data. It went great and it made this beautiful warm spring weekend even better since I was stressin leading up to it. Stuff that'll go toward professional development!
They're using a lot more GIS (imagery and geocoding) to save money and make the process easier for everyone. Plus, now you will be able to fill out the census online along with mail or phone options! They project this approach will save the government $5 billion.
Saw lava flow out of Kilauea in the Big Island. The Hawaiian islands are interesting because they were a chain of volcanic eruptions going northwest to southeast, so Oahu is one of the older eruptions therefore the lava has cooled and been exposed to the air long enough that it's covered in flora and fauna now. The Big Island is the youngest and most southeast island above sea level and is the only island that still has volcanoes. The geology of the Big Island is so different, you can see miles of cooled lava along the landscape, heading from the volcanoes down toward the ocean. Then lush plants adjacent to lava. The black sand beaches are lava that's eroded into coarse sediment. I'll try to post some more stuff but I also feel much happier the less I'm plugged into social media, so I'll prob post a lot more when we get home. (at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park)
