...you’re a fetus, you don’t count
You laugh at the response, giggling to yourself in the comfort of your own empty dorm as Jin and Jungkook start to go off on each other. Your roommate is hardly ever around, seeing as she mostly stays at her girlfriend’s place. You continue to tell her it would just be easier to move in there, but you’re always met with an uncertain excuse. Still, living (practically) alone does have its perks.
There’s no one to snitch on you when you get drunk.
Okay, so you weren’t planning to get totally wasted, not tonight at least, but you did need a drink. Your professor went off on you today for coming in a minute and a half late and then proceeded to give you mountains of homework. Usually, that’s not so bad and it doesn’t lead you to opening a bottle of vodka at five-ten in the afternoon, but that wasn’t all you were stressed about.
You were absolutely drowning in coursework. On top of the extra homework you “earned”, you’ve also been given two separate intro projects. You swear they have it out for you… or maybe just students in general. Either way, you have more work than you know what to do with.
Thankfully one of the projects was in groups, so you managed to get that finished earlier today at the library with your group members. However, the other project, which is only half done, still lingers over your head. It’s ruining your mood and just the thought of staying up all night to finish it is giving you a headache.
Really, you just want one drink. It’s not the distraction you’re looking for, it’s the liquid courage. You need energy and inspiration to get this project done because God knows you won’t be able to do it on your own. There was just one problem-
-you can’t find the damn corkscrewer.
Leaving the bottle on the counter, you start digging around your kitchen for the second time. You go through drawer after drawer, searching for the offending item. After a few more times looking, your patience starts wearing thin. You didn’t think your day could be going any worse when-
“Fuck!” You cry, pulling your finger back to hold it to your chest. Your teeth dig into your lip to suppress a groan. Your skin is hot as you clutch it carefully where it had been sandwiched between the drawer.
Casting a hard glare at the wooden drawer that’s still slightly open, you exhale through your nose, trying to remain calm. Now, you thought, it couldn’t get worse.
But you suppose the universe never really liked you, anyway, did it?
A knock sounds at your door, a familiar voice on the other side. You don’t even have time to let out another curse before the door is pushed open, your room adviser, Soomin, coming to stand inside your living room.
Her mouth is open slightly as she goes to speak, but stops short at the sight of the bottle on your countertop. Your eyes fall shut when you realize that there’s no way out of this.
She clears her throat. “I heard some rustling and then a shout and I came to see if you were okay.” Soomin says slowly, her eyes still trained dazedly on the vodka. Then her brow arches, unimpressed, and she levels you with a condescending glare. “You know the rules about drinking in the dorms, Y/N, it’s not allowed. I’m going to have to-”
“-hey, Y/N! What the hell?” A sharp, low voice resonates from the hallway and rich rockets in your head. It’s indistinctive and you don’t recognize it. Both you and Soomin turn around to the source of the voice and you frown, confused.
Standing in your doorframe is a man, completely unbothered and looking at you expectantly. He’s not very tall, but still much taller than you. His hair is black and fluffy, falling flat against his forehead. His eyes are dark, too, almost tired. Though, there’s something about the air around him, he seems… withdrawn.
He heaves a heavy sigh and comes to stand directly in front of you. Once blocking you from Soomin’s view, he crosses his arms. “Jesus, Y/N, where have you been? I was waiting outside for like five minutes.”
Your frown deepens and you’re about to tell him he has the wrong girl, but then he winks. It’s quick and you would have missed it if you blinked. He eyes shift over to the bottle on the counter and it’s like a light switch goes off in your head.
You nod sullenly, swiftly rushing out a faux apology. “Sorry, I was on my way. I couldn’t find my, uh- shoe.”
The man looks unmoved by your improvised excuse, but continues the act, anyway. “Well, whatever, can I have my vodka now?”
“Excuse me.” Soomin cuts in, causing the two of you to turn around and face her. “Who are you?” She points to your unknown savior.
“I’m Yoongi, Y/N’s… friend.”
Nodding in agreement, you watch as Soomin’s eyes narrow. “I’ve never seen you around before.” The RA interjects, suspiciously.
The man, Yoongi, shrugs nonchalantly. “Don’t come often.”
“Obviously,” Soomin drawls, her jaw ticking. “Or else you would know that we do not allow drinking in this dorm.”
“Then I guess it’s a good thing I don’t live in this dorm.”
Yoongi smiles at her, small and tight, but smug and dripping with sarcasm. You get the feeling it comes natural to him.
Soomin glares harder at the two of you before trying one last angle. “That doesn’t change the fact that your friend here does and she is the one with the bottle.”
Rolling his eyes, Yoongi groans, exasperated. “Lay off, okay? I couldn’t pick it up myself so I asked her to. She was just on her way to give it to me.”
You’re surprised with how easy the lie falls from his lips, like it’s the only language he’s ever spoken; surprised and impressed.
With one last unbelieving look, Soomin turns on her heel and leaves you be. The second she’s out the door you release a breath of relief. A hand on your chest, you turn to thank Yoongi, but find that he has already made his leave to the hallway.
You chase after him, catching up to and stopping him. “Hey, wait!” He huffs in response, all traces of your “friend” gone. “Thanks for that in there.”
“Yeah, it’s whatever.” He dismisses, seemingly bored. “I saw you needed my help and I had nothing better to do.”
You smirk, finding his bluntness refreshing. “Either way, you really just saved by ass back there.” He says nothing and you take that as a sign to continue. “How did you know my name?”
“I was passing by as she was yelling at you.” He replies swiftly, as if he has no interest in the conversation, but then he asks you, “Why were you drinking this early, anyway?”
“I’m stressed, okay?” You defend, pouting. A hand goes to rest on your hip and Yoongi finally begins to look amused. “Don’t judge me, this is a judgment free dorm.”
“A judgement free dorm?”
“Yes.”
“You do know that we are adults in college, right?” He snarks, a smirk tugging the corners of his lips. “That sounds like something you would tell eight-year-olds in elementary school.”
You ignore his remark, choosing instead to focus on the fact that he’s talking to you now. “Well, it should be a judgement free dorm. That way strangers won’t be able to make fun of me.”
“Who said I was making fun of you?”
“You weren’t making fun?”
“I mean I didn’t say that either,” He grins, cheeky. You find you like Yoongi cheeky, he’s funny.
You continue to talk with Yoongi for a little bit longer, finding his company more appealing than doing your classwork. You learn that he, too, just finished a project and that was why he had been there to save you from your demon adviser. He was on his way back home when he heard you getting chewed out.
Within that short span of time you learn that, as you predicted, Yoongi is made up largely of sarcastic remarks and tired rebuffs. However, you also find that he possess a similar sense of humor and you grin, excited.
“We should do this again!” You grin, as Yoongi announces his departure. “I’d hate to never see my new friend again.”
“Exactly when did I agree to being friends?” He jests, and you’re only half sure he’s joking.
“When you saved me from my evil room adviser.” You say matter-of-factly, as if it were obvious. “You’re never getting rid of me, now.”
He rolls his eyes with a scoff, but you swear you see the remnants of a smile ghosting his mouth. “Yeah, okay.” He grunts dryly. “I’m going to regret this, aren’t I?”
You beam. “Absolutely.”
Before he leaves you exchange contact information and social medias. You wave him off with lifted spirits and he simply shakes his head, pretending not to know you as he leaves. Damn, already acting like a friend.
Getting back to your room, you eye the vodka carefully. Deciding that you no longer need it, you gently put it back where you found it. You collect your phone from the counter, ignoring the ungodly number of messages from the group chat where Jin and Jungkook still argue about something entirely unrelated to the original problem. With a new sense of confidence, you spread out your homework and set out to complete it.
Today wasn’t so bad, you decide.
