THE ARTICLE I WROTE ON WOMENS RIGHTS
JIGSAW YOUTH
“We know there's not, one way, one light, one stupid truth “
There are 4 major topics I want to talk about today that are having a major influence on the third wave of feminism. One, rape laws and how lightly the conviction of rape is still taken in the legal system. Two, abortion rights and the constant attack of women by pro-lifers, Three, media and the fake portrait of females and males that they shove down everyone's throat and lastly, reclaiming the word FEMINIST, for what it really means.
YES! Of course feminism is important today. If now more than ever. The third wave of feminism have grown lazy (no offence) to change any of the patriarchal bullshit that still applies to our everyday lives. On January 4th, an article was released on BBC news about an 18 year old Californian girl who was raped by someone who then pleaded to be her boyfriend. Although already convicted to three years in prison the man was let out after a hearing on the Wednesday prior to the publication due to a law dating back to 1872 which stated "a person who gets consent for sex by pretending to be someone else is guilty of rape only if posing as the victim's spouse." The same law is enforced in California and The United States Government is planning to pass the law in other states.
If that doesn't convince you, how about abortion rights? Not only did the Conservative MP Stephen Woodworth present Motion 312 which would call the House of Commons committee meeting to review when a human life really begins, HE has also participated in numerous pro life rallies and two different national debates regarding the rights of the unborn. (HE CALLED THE FIRST ONE) The thing that really grinds my fucking gears the most is the fact he is a MAN. Don't get me wrong, I am no "man hating feminist" as many others have claimed me to be, I believe in equality on all levels. Humans, animals, nature. The fact that the law HE was trying to have changed doesn't really effect him in any way physically because he can't even get pregnant let alone, have an abortion, makes it very unfair in my opinion for him to even be trying to "review" when a human life really begins. Stephen, keep your politics out of my pussy.
The next problem I want to address is the media. The tobacco industry first targeted females in the 1920's. In 1960 Virginia Slims came out with the slogans "You've Come a Long Way Baby" and "Slimmer than the fat cigarettes men smoke". Believe it or not, the media is still influencing young girls to dress a certain way, act a certain way and think a certain way. Tobacco wasn't the only way either. Shows like jersey shore, gossip girls, etc.. show young females an example of women as partying, catty, unintelligent and tasteless. With fake tans, loads of makeup and hours put into their look just to have them look like something so unnatural. These young girls are watching these shows! And constantly being persuaded that this is the only way people will love you. The men on these shows use, objectify and belittle these women everyday. The argument could be made that the women on those shows have put themselves in that situation and therefore have "set themselves up" but I disagree. I think the media has to be a gender friendly place and more television shows/movies need to display women with a confident, intelligent and empowering role. I cannot count the amount of times I've talked to a teenage girl or young woman and have them look completely baffled when I bring up the names; Germaine Greer, Betty Friedan or Naomi Wolf. That's the problem with today. More young people need to turn off their television and pick up a book, or instrument, or pen and paper.
The last part of this article is something I feel so strongly about and I hope one day so do all other females! The word feminist to me means " a strong believer in equal political, economic, and social rights for all genders." I find nowadays a lot of girls and boys feel conflicted claiming themselves to be feminist because society has distorted the title of a feminist to also mean "an able bodied, man hating, privileged woman, fighting only for the rights of women" or "an angry dyke". This is exactly what they are trying to do. For years society has tried to make the feminist movement weaker by giving it an undesirable title but its time for that to stop. People argue that the feminist movement died with the women suffrage movement, when women won the right to vote in 1954. Although that may apply to some women involved with the suffrage movement, what about the women in places like Aruba, Guam ,Vatican City and Saudia Arabia where women haven't even won the right to vote yet? Do you think that the women suffrage movement would be happy if we gave up after one big win for the feminist movement when it is such a small step for international equality? In Bahrain, women weren't allowed to vote till 2002, in Kuwait and Qatar women weren't allowed till 2005 and in 2006, United Arab Emirates. If anything had died that day women "won" the right to vote, I'd hope it was the misogynist, power drunk bullshit we see displayed by the government still to this day. Women should have grown stronger after the Women Suffrage movement in hopes to have equality throughout all the world among all races and genders, because even though we made it look like we had done exactly what we wanted, it wasn't long till the ugly truth shined right through that first victory and let the second wave of feminist know there was still work to be done. Today, there is still work to be done. Rape laws are unjust, the labour industry is not equal at all, no matter how much they try to prove it is, the media is constantly bombarding us with picture of what a "perfect woman" is and I won't take it. So I say its time to stand up and work together to reclaim the title of feminist for the people of the 21st century because equality is truly the root of feminism.
