What do you think the age difference between Lance and Clair is in the games? I always go back and forth between a close 3-ish year gap so that they can have a close sibling dynamic and rivalry or having Lance be a lot older like 7-10 years that Clair wants to catch up to. I think they'd always have sibling dynamic regardless but it would be different depending on their ages I guess. Can't decide what dynamic I like better lol
To me personally I like believing they have a considerable~ gap of roughly 4 to 8 years.
So I.e if Lance were to be 30 clair is roughly 22.
Or sometimes it's a Lance 30 Clair 25 day for me! It depends!
Pokemon ages for characters are funny. Especially for adults, cough Cyrus, so they're probably both younger than what we believe.
Clair strikes me as the sibling who wants to prove herself because she believes she has a disadvantage over Lance in almost every way since birth, so in my mind she appears mentally younger.
In the same breath, Lance could also simply appear older than Clair because of his more serious and leading nature. And having already own many titles in a lifetime. (Elite, Champion, Dragon Master, potential heir) Makes him feel a lot older but could also be the case of being a younger prodigy.
The only instance of their ages is in the New Year's event in Pokemon Masters where Lance states,
"I remember when we were both kids, you once sent me a cute card that had a dragon Pokemon on it. Ah, that sure takes me back..."
Accuracy and non canon game aside, he speaks her as if they're pretty close in age if they were both children at the time stated here.

Hi I came across your tale of genji posts in the tag and I'm not sure if you've answered this before but what translation would you recommend for someone who's thinking of reading it for the first time?

(first, as someone who has read all the english translations in full, a word of reassurance: it doesn’t really matter which translation you read. All the translations are excellent; they all have their own advantages. There is no definitive 'best' translation, and honestly, until you’ve experienced them for yourself, there is no way of knowing which is best for you.)
the unhelpful answer: honestly, it depends on what you want to get out of the experience.
for a first-time reader, i would generally recommend the Seidensticker, simply because it’s probably the most readable and is widely recommended as a good place to start; or the Tyler, which is probably the closest we have to a ‘definitive’ english translation atm (and my personal favourite)
however, everyone has their own preferences, so under the cut i’ve put together some of the pros and cons of each version (and obviously, this is very much a matter of perspective--for example, i prefer translations which have lots of footnotes, but some people dislike that etc.)
Waley (1933)
Pros: rich poetic language, first complete translation, gives a sense of the gradeur of the original, stands alone as a novel well, naming fairly consistent
Cons: poetry is run into the text, a (fairly unimportant) chapter is inexplicably missing, more liberal with his prose style, dense style if you're not used to 19th/early 20th century literature, very few footnotes
Seidensticker (1976)
Pros: most readable, easy to source, consistent naming
Cons: fewer footnotes, less academically rigorous than the Tyler translation, slightly less beautiful prose than the Waley and Tyler
Tyler (2001)
Pros: very true to original, lots of footnotes (integrated, so on ebook you can easily reference them), available easily (in print and ebook), accurate, excellent academic resource, direct and minamilist prose style that's still beautiful, good introduction
Cons: mostly the same as pros, just depends on perspective, i.e. lots of footnotes, inconsistent naming (use of shifting titles, true to original), very little is explicitly stated in-text (there were lots of things I only fully picked up on when reading different translations later). the Tyler is definitely the least domesticating, so if that isn’t your style, then maybe don’t start here
Washburn (2015)
Pros: academically rigorous, but less full-on than the Tyler; integrates contextualising information into the translation itself rather than in footnotes; excellent introduction
Cons: can be accused of lacking concision, a bit stodgy, sacrifices some of the ambiguity of the original text in favour of greater clarity
so in conclusion, i would say:
if you don’t have any experience with classical japanese literature and would prefer to read a version that is slightly more domesticated, and more readable, choose Seidensticker
if you don’t mind reading a version that is a little harder, but is ‘truest’ to the original, choose Tyler
if you have a burning passion for the Victorian novel and its style, choose Waley
if you want a version that spells out some of the more subtle elements of the story in the text itself, choose Washburn

Do you know if any comic mentions any movies that Dick canonically likes?
He watches a fictional TV show called Lost World of the Warlord (not sure if he really likes it or if he just watches it out of boredom though). He also watches some other show with Roy but there’s no mention of what the show is. He’s known to like watching nature documentaries sometimes. He also likes to watch football games.
There have been mentions of things he’s seen like Scooby-Doo. He watched The Mark of Zorro with the batfam, and he watched The Magnificent Seven with Tim and Alfred. He’s referenced Spongebob (and The Brady Bunch is referenced between him and Tim... not sure if that counts) so he’s possibly watched that as well.

About the AU: Ella’s attitude, with her kindness and resolution to be always positive in spite of everything life kept throwing at her, reminded me awfully a lot of Canada. So, I would use Nyo!Canada (Marguerite/Maggie) as Cinderella (I still have to come up with a good nickname, though). Her father would be France (I would hate killing him off, haha, but it has to be done, at times), and her deceased mother, Jeanne. (They obviously wouldn’t be exactly like the characters in the movie, but retain the generally positive and kind attitude.)
The prince would be America, and the king, England. I just think that the dynamic would fit them – Alfred a young and hopeful prince who wants to be free, and Arthur, a king who wants the best for his son and the kingdom but ends up being overly stern because of it. I would use Lithuania in a role similar to the Captain – in the fic, he would be Alfred’s reluctant best friend who cares for him and ends up being dragged along in his schemes. I think Japan could be the Duke due to his closeness with both America and England in the canon material. He would support Arthur and disapprove of Alfred’s infatuation with Marguerite, but wouldn’t conspire with the stepmother, he would instead eventually come to accept Alfred’s decision. I also don’t think I would kill off Arthur, haha, my heart couldn’t handle it.
I am, instead a bit more undecided on the roles of the stepmother and stepsisters as I don’t like using Hetalia characters as antagonists. I guess one of the stepsisters could be Nyo!Russia (Anna/Anya), who would be cruel to Marguerite without truly realizing what she’s doing and eventually come to regret it (and be forgiven). I have two different takes I could take on the rest: the other stepsister could be Belarus – who wouldn’t participate in the abuse but not intervene in Maggie’s favour, either, just watching from the sidelines – and the stepmother 2p!Nyo!Russia (Olga, who I see more shrewd and intentionally cruel than canon Russia). In alternative, Olga could instead be the other stepsister (Anya’s intentionally cruel twin) and their mother 2p!Ukraine, Sofyia, who I personally see as a very calculating and cold person – and as such, quite fit for the role. Essentially, aside from Anya, the others would be OCs unless I find somebody else suited for the role...

I have a similar dilemma with the Fairy Godmother. I was thinking I could go with three fairies portrayed by Nyo!Prussia (Julia/Julchen), Nyo!Spain (Isabel), and Nyo!France (Marianne). Or, maybe it could be just a young fairy who once ended in trouble and was saved by Maggie and has been checking on her ever since, waiting for an opportunity to return the favour. In this case, my pick would be Seychelles (Michelle).
But, this is just a random idea, I’m not going to write it. And I hope I’ll stop thinking about it because I have other stuff I should be concentrating on, haha. Lol a lot of English speakers do find 'your' and 'you're' hard because they're pronounced the same with similar spelling and it's easy to mix up. I've also met a lot of people who don't know the difference and treat it like the same word. Same with 'there' 'they're' and 'their'. Which is weird because we get firmly educated over it.
Yeah, I know that they’re pronounced the same, but as you said, I thought that people would learn the difference in school…
I mean, in Italian we have the same issue with the present conjugation of the the verb ‘avere’ (to have). The present tense of the verb needs a ‘h’ at the beginning (except for the first and second person plural)
Io ho = I have
tu hai = you have
egli/ella ha = he/she/it has
essi hanno = they have
In Italian the ‘h’ sound is mute, so it has the same prononunciation as words written without the ‘h’ at the beginning, which can lead to confusion when children are starting to write.
o = or
ai = a preposition (that can be translated in different English prepositions depending on the context)
a = another preposition (same as above)
anno = year
Italian children, however, are drilled this differences basically since they start reading, and it’s very uncommon to find somebody that by the end of grade school doesn’t know how to use them correctly (save some occasional mistakes and typos, I mean), so I thought it would be the same for English speakers – as you said it is, actually.
Which is why I’m so surprised to see so many people not knowing the difference – I mean, I could understand a couple of people, but it seems to be a very widespread problem…
