I did everything right. So what happened?
You are the witch tasked with taking down Klaus during the sacrifice. Due to being stronger and more experienced than Bonnie, this burden fell onto you.
But something's not right.
Authors note: If you can't tell, this is very much not canon compliant, as you are the one casting the spell on Klaus instead of Bonnie and- well, you'll have to see what else, or who else, got changed.
TRIGGER/CONTENT WARNING: Blood, gore, canon typical violence, depictions of child murder (not graphic, but should be thrown in here), angst, hurt/comfort(?)
Your concentration had broken, and the spell you were working on stopped.
No. No no no please. I tried so hard. I got all of that power. How could this happen?
You did everything right. You studied the spell you were casting all day leading up to the sacrifice. You were older, you had more experience and you were stronger than Bonnie. You made sure she did the spell to save Elena’s life to preserve as much of yours as possible. Sure, you locked them in the abandoned witch house but that was a basic spell, it didn’t require much power to do.
You had it all planned out: let Klaus do the sacrifice, Damon snaps the witches neck as you weaken Klaus, then Elijah goes in for the kill.
That’s when your brain processed the piercing pain in your abdomen. Looking down, you saw a blade sticking through your stomach, blood seeping through the wound. The power that has flowed through you since you were 16 was steadily flowing out of your body through your blood.
“NO!” You aren’t fully sure who shouted, your brain already going fuzzy.
Klaus’ body, which was previously writhing in pain, now stood tall as his werewolf side began to take hold. His eyes began to change from a dark blue to a piercing yellow, the sclera turning black. And he was smiling.
Slowly, you turn your head around to see who destroyed your plan. Blonde hair and blue eyes greet you, a short, curt smile plays on her face. Confusion takes over your pained face. Who is this?
“Sorry, darling,” the woman says, her British accent slipping through her fanged mouth. “It’s nothing personal. Well, I guess it is. You want to kill my brother, and I can’t let that happen.”
The woman pulls the blade from your abdomen, and your blood flows freer. You collapse to your knees, vision blurring and your balance wavering. Just as you begin to topple over, strong arms steady your form, gently lowering you into their lap and cradling your upper body.
Your vision begins to refocus on the face above you, and it becomes clear who came to your rescue.
“Shhh, my love,” he starts, biting into his wrist before putting his now open wound to your mouth. “You’re going to be alright. You just need to drink. I’m here, don’t worry.”
The blood flows into your mouth, leaving a terrible, metallic taste behind. Even though the taste makes you want to gag, it’s as though your body knows his blood will heal it. And so, you drink it down greedily, feeling your body stitch itself back together and slowly gain your strength back.
All the while, Elijah cradles your body close to his, lightly stroking the arm he’s holding. His brother and sister are long gone, but he will have to deal with them later. Klaus will have some explaining to do about their not-so lost at sea siblings. For now, his lover needs him, whatever they may need.
You detach your lips from his wrist, grateful for its healing properties but thankful you can finally stop ingesting his blood. He moves his arm away from you and uses it to wrap himself further around you, as if shielding you from the world.
“You’re okay,” he says, cradling your head to his shoulder and stroking your hair. “I am sorry, you were never supposed to be harmed in this way. I swear, Rebekah will face consequences for this, you have my word.”
“Rebekah,” you say lightly, pulling back from his shoulder. “That was your sister? But I thought you said Klaus dumped all your siblings into the ocean?”
“Obviously I was mistaken,” Elijah says, eyes raking your face. “And I will deal with that later. For now, I am going to take you home, and you are going to rest.”
“But, I need to check on my friends,” you say, beginning to pull away from Elijah. “I have to make sure they’re okay. And now that Klaus broke the curse, none of them are safe. Oh god.”
You’re beginning to spiral.
“He’s going to want revenge on all of us.” You pull away from Elijah completely, holding your head in your hands, pacing back and forth. “He’ll go after us, the people we hold close, our families-”.
You stop dead in your tracks.
You can’t feel the protection spell you put on their house.
And with Rebekah with Klaus, she could easily compel her way in. Her and Klaus.
“Elijah,” you say, your tone beginning to waver. “You need to take me to my family's house. Now.”
He holds a confused look on his face until he sees the desperation on your own as you turn to face him. Without a second thought, he picks you up and races to your family home.
You and Elijah stop outside your family’s home. Upon first look, the house seems normal. The lights are off, the porch light is on, and the door is closed. All good signs.
As you begin to move towards the house, Elijah’s strong grip on your waist stops you. You turn around to ask him what he’s doing, but he cuts you off before you can speak.
He says your name, gently. “You don’t want to go in there.”
Your eyes widen, mouth slightly agape as he looks at you with sadness and pity in his eyes.
“No. No you’re wrong.” Your eyes start to water, and you begin to raise your voice. “You haven’t even stepped foot in the house. You can’t know what happened!”
Elijah lets go of your waist, only to grab hold of your shoulder, using his other had to raise your chin from its bowed position. He says your name once again, “I can smell it from here.”
He didn’t explain further, but he didn’t need to. You understood.
“No, I don’t believe you.” You refuse to let your tears fall as you stare him in the eyes. “Let me go.”
“I said let me GO!” You use your magic to push him off you and multiple feet away as you turn on your heel and book it into the house. You bust down the door with your magic and begin to search the home.
You don’t have to search far.
You notice the first bloodstain only a few feet away from where the door landed, and follow it into the next room over, the living room.
Blood seemed to cover every square inch of the room. You stared on in horror until your eyes finally landed on your mother and stepfather. Or at least, what was left of them. Their bodies were torn to shreds, along with the couch their remains rested on. Your stomach churns at the scene. You let out a sob as your tears begin to fall freely.
You didn’t have the best relationship with them, but they still raised you. And right now, all you can think about are the good moments you shared with them while the bad stay repressed.
A creak in the floorboards behind you startles you out of your shock. You turn around expecting the hybrid, but you’re faced with your lover.
“Elijah-” you start, but your throat constricts as you begin to speak. “You- you can’t-”
If he was in the house, then that meant…
You sprint for the stairs, your body on autopilot as you burst into the second room to the left. Your little sister's room. Corrin.
That’s all you can see in her room.
You see her body, laying on the floor. Still mostly in tact.
You move on shaky legs, collapsing next to her and cradling her body into yours.
“Oh my god,” you whisper to her. “I’m so sorry. You were never supposed to be involved in this. This wasn’t supposed to be your life. You were supposed to- to graduate high school a-and go to college. You were- gonna make something of yourself.”
Your voice cracks and you curl over your sister, sobbing uncontrollably. Elijah slowly enters the room, not wanting to startle you again. The scene horrifies him. He knew Klaus was heartless, but murdering a child? That was taking it too far.
He watched on as his lover rocked back and forth with their deceased sister, whispers continuously cut off by sobs. Out of respect, he didn’t listen to their words, but he knew he had to get them out of here. Staying was only making everything worse, and he was unsure how much more their mind could take.
Slowly, he crouched down next to you and gently put his hand on your shoulder. You jumped and whipped your head around, meeting his brown eyes. His gaze was steady, but you could see the heartbreak within his eyes.
“I can bring her back,” you start, tearing your eyes away from him and back to your sister. “I can bring her back to life.”
“No, you don’t get it. I can do it. I just need to get back to the witch house-”
“I’ll need a lot of power, and I’ll have to figure it out as I go, but I’m sure-”
“Love,” Elijah says, more sternly. He gently grabs both your shoulders, forcing you to face him. “You are not strong enough right now. The ritual from earlier today drained you of your magic. Not only that, but you don’t know what the repercussions will be to bring someone back to life.”
He then moves his hands from your shoulders to your face. “I understand how painful it is to lose the ones you love. But you have to let her go, lest you die yourself, and I lose you as well.”
You felt the tears begin to resurface once again, finally allowing yourself to accept the truth. She wasn’t coming back, none of them were.
“I thought I did everything right,” you whimpered into his chest, gripping onto his suit jacket as though you would fall through the floor without it.
“You did, my love. There’s nothing else you could have done.” He strokes your hair and rests his chin atop your head, occasionally kissing the top of your head.
You aren’t sure how long you stay there kneeling next to your sister and hanging onto Elijah Mikaelson like a lifeline. He begins to feel your grip loosen slightly, and that’s when he knows it’s time to move. You were drained, and he could see you eyes fighting to stay open with the weight of the day forcing them down.
“Rest your eyes darling. I’m going to bring you home. We will figure this out once you’ve gotten your rest, you have my word.”
He lifts you into his arms, holding you tightly to his chest. You curl further into yourself and into him, your partner. Part of you believes you’re in a bad dream. That you’ll wake up any moment in bed with Elijah and cry to him about this nightmare, and then go reinforce the protections you put on this house.
You know it’s not true. But all you can do right now is hope that maybe it is, and that maybe if you close your eyes everything will be fine.
So, you finally close your painfully heavy eyes and pass out in the safety of your lover's arms, ready to wake up at home.
