So I neglected to write last week. At all. And it isn't because I wasn't working out or because of my chronic shoulder injury (trigger-point therapy with heat is a godsend) or because I was doing badly. I PR-ed a few times this past week. So why didn't I write, if I was getting/doing better?
Because everything felt HARD. Every mile felt like the first mile I had ever run, every lift felt like it could be my last. My legs felt like stones, my bad shoulder felt like lead, and I honestly had one of the roughest weeks of my Crossfit experience. From that, I've tried to pull the positives I'm taking away:
1. I am not acutely injured, I am dealing with a chronic issue and CAN perform most lifts IF I do them at a light weight and pay massive attention to form. This goes for cleans, push-press, and most overhead lifts. The only lifts I'm not gunning for right now are ones that lock out the arms (OHS, snatch) because they put a lot of strain on the part of my rotator cuff that needs love, attention and ibuprofen.
2. I am harder on myself than I should be. Seriously. Forgive yourself during a workout. You did a rep and your form slipped? That sucks, but you just did TWENTY-FOUR with near-perfect form! Those hang-ups make hard workouts so much harder than they need to be.
3. Bad workouts/days/weeks are going to happen and everything is going to suck. It's going to be hard to put my shoes on, much less run a mile for time. It isn't going to suck less because I focus on the suck and man, did you know your shoulder could interfere with your running, because that is just WEIRD. It's going to suck less because I focus on the fact that regardless of the suckiness, I dropped 3 minutes off my last recorded mile time for Crossfit. It's going to suck less because I actually jumped my box jumps instead of stepping up.
I had a really good period of time where Crossfit was easily progressing, and I took for granted that sometimes that won't be the case. This week my goal is to be more positive and forgiving of myself while I keep prepping for my race. Which is weird, because this is the first week in a long time that my goal hasn't been specifically to clean up my diet or exercise more. It feels weird, but in a good, positive way.
