What's the Ryu number for Lady Deirdre Sky from Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri?
Lady Deirdre Sky has a Ryu Number of 3.
(explanation below)
I've been playing Alpha Centauri a bit
Happy Birthday, Deirdre Skye!
Deirdre Skye is born on this day, the 28th of May 2025.
Deirdre is the leader one of the more popular factions, and with good reason. Gaia’s Stepdaughters are fun to play, sympathetic (bad enough that Chiron is already Planet B for humanity, they don’t want yet another planet trashed, but they also care about people), and, from the flavour text, the closest the game has to a protagonist faction.
I’ve posted a drabble to commemorate this occasion.
However, the best way to celebrate is of course to work on protecting our own planet, Earth.
Chairman Yang told me mind worms keep eating his bases so I asked how many bases he has and he said he just builds a colony pod and gets a new one afterwards so I said it sounds like he's just feeding colonists to mind worms and then his drones started crying
This is an old snowclone about an even older game, but...
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri leaders as Dril tweets:
Sister Miriam Godwinson: blocked. blocked. blocked. youre all blocked. none of you are free of sin
Commissioner Pravin Lal: i regret being tasked the emotional burden of maintaining the final bastion of morality and NIce manners in this endless ocean of human SHIT
CEO Nwabudike Morgan: a new face steps into a rowdy roadside bar somewehre along Interstate 22.. back of his leather jacket says "Trickle Down Economics Are Real"
Colonel Corazón Santiago: closing my eyes and mentally visuelizing my enemies bodies, in 3d , to analyze them for weak points
Lady Deirdre Skye: mean while, while you were "Gaming ", i tasted 100 different wines in a cave behind a waterfall and cried into a shaman's arms
Chairman Sheng-ji Yang: i put years of hard work into getting my torture degree at torture college & now everyones like "oh tortures bad","its ineffective" fuck off
Academician Prokhor Zakharov: committing unforgivable crimes against nautre in my laboratory ,trying to create the next genetically discombobulated meme animal
Anyone know good ones for Alien Crossfire folks? Or have other suggestions for the original ones? I wished I had been able to find a less obscure one that fit Morgan.
I wanna talk to a Ferengi about capitalism
Ferengi society, to my eyes, isn't really capitalism, though no less exploitative. Capitalism would imply some kind of investor class, a formalized system of stocks and assets. The Ferengi are merchants, and their philosophy surrounds the movement of goods as well as money. When a Ferengi invests in something, they're investing in a single clear business opportunity to move goods from a prospective seller or owner to a profitable buyer. I feel some almost mercantalist vibes coming from them, especially sticking to a commodity currency like GPL, plus the vicious competition of a criminal cartel
What would they think about the excesses of our age? Would they admire a class of people who profit immensely with practically no effort, able to mostly ignore moving goods? Would they see it as a perversion of the Rules of Aquisition, a bunch of hew-mons with no lobes for business reaping rewards on the raw inertia of their wealth? Would they admire the ruthlessness or see it as more hew-mon barbarism? Would they marvel at synthesizing value from ownership, money that exists backed by nothing but collective agreement and labor, or would they see it as worthless paper and tokens, baffled that the hew-mons treated such stuff as profit, killed and died and fought for it?
Unrelated but I'd love to drop Nwabuduke Morgan from Alpha Centauri into the Star Trek universe and see how quickly he becomes the Ferengi's favorite (or least favorite!) hew-mon!
revisiting the old games and remembering how the SMAC expansion got kinda goofy with the factions
