The thing about this blog being called Unconventional Tales implies that I am telling more than one story. Which is true.
So a quick round-up of things I am currently working on when I’m not teaching small children!
On the Unconventional front, I’m hoping to get published within the next two years or so. I really believe in this book, y’all, and I know a lot of other people do too.
Sketching out ideas for an audio dramedy about a hotel on Valentine’s Day weekend and the pitfalls of having to serve guests, their significant others, and their other significant others. Once I have an idea of where I want things to go, I might enlist some friends to do a read through for shiggles. And the title is Side Conversations.
Looking over an old pilot I wrote about a guy that decides he wants to open a secular funeral home due to one bad experience too many at a funeral. That one is Speaking Ill. Should there be an original screenplay competition on the horizon, I’ll probably be touching that up and submitting it.
My big, big idea that’ll take years to write, Rue. This was actually inspired by the character of Aunt Petunia in Harry Potter. Basically, what is it like to be the “normal one” of a pair of siblings and what happens when said sibling gets themselves killed and you end up raising their extraordinary kiddo? Only Rue herself is going to have a lot of dimensions we get to explore. And possibly a trilogy. Wowie.
So on the scale of none to done, Unconventional is definitely the one that is in its closest to finished form, with Speaking Ill as a close second. My other two are in very early stages and will definitely take time (or a very hyped up summer or two) to write. But I guess it’s nice to see all of these ideas here and to share them, even if just to say “Hey, these are things I’m doing!”
I missed writing, and I especially missed letting my own imagination and ideas run wild without constraints. I love working with others too, but it’s also been a long, long time since I’ve consistently written things down for me. It’s as if a floodgate of ideas just opened and I’m drowning in a sea of characters, plots, and dialogues. It’s exciting. But it’s also a bit overwhelming, to be honest.
I’m going to write these things with the intention of just getting them down. If they get published or performed, cool. And if not, then, I made an art. I wrote some things. And that’s pretty cool too.
